I removed mine a few days ago..... the way I did it was take some tin snips and a large screw driver and pry it out ... Only took about 5 minutes

First you need to remove the intake elbow near the turbo to expose the turbo inlet. Then you need to remove the black snap ring in front of the silencer ring. Once the snap ring pops out, you can take out the silencer ring. Put the intake elbow back on and you should be good to go.

This pic is with the silencer ring.

The small black ring is like a spring and can be difficult to remove. Be careful not to scratch your turbo while removing it. If you hit the fins or scratch the turbo bad enough, you may have to replace it. Don't let it discourage you though, it's really an easy mod for a lot more sing.

Here is a pic with the snap and silencer rings removed

The above pics will help. Once you get the intake hose off, it will be really obvious. I used 2 small screwdrivers and worked around the snap ring. Pry up gently with one, and slide the other under workng your way around. I think I got 1/4 to 1/2 way around and pulled it out with my fingers.

Thumbs up

Mine was a PITA, because of the orientation of the gap in the ring. Mine was pointing towards the top of the inlet. It took about an hour or so, but patience prevailed.
Honestly, since the difference is so minor it may not have been worth the hour spent for me. My biggest difference in turbo whistle was the airbox and inlet tube mods.

Under load if you lift your foot off the pedal it's like the boost comes out of the inlet on the turbo. Making a really loud whoossshhh sound that isn't NORMAL and bad for the turbo.

It's only done this sound 1 time on it's own with the ring installed (was passing a car going up a hill). The other 1 time I had to make it do it so I could figure out what that sound was. At the time I didn't know what it was so I was trying to dupli. it again so I could listen for it.

Without the ring it did it 3 times to me in the first 30 mins of driving and even worse once I hooked up my toyhauler. I put the ring back in the next day. It wasn't even out 48 hours.haha

If I want I can make it do it by getting full boost as early as possible (low rpms like loading it going up a hill at 50) and taking my foot out of it real quick.

I took mine out but the snap ring was abnormally tight.Didn't help the gap was about at the 2:30 position. Had all the right tools and it wouldn't even lift enough to get started. Started to booger up the housing inlet so I just grabbed the silencer itself with some needlenose vicegrips and gave them a 180 turn and the silencer ring wrapped itself up and popped right out.
Left that **** snap ring in place

If you are talking about the sound when you let off the throttle at high boost, it doesn't damage your turbo at all. It isn't harmful to the turbo.

From this website, by Geno's Garage, http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/turbo_faq.htm :

"When my throttle snaps closed, there is a brief whoosh or whistle sound from the air filter area. What is causing this?

When the engine is loaded, very high turbine speeds are required for the turbo charger to provide intake manifold boost. When the fuel is suddenly cut off, the exhaust volume collapses and the turbocharger rapidly spins down. As the turbine looses speed, it looses it's ability to sustain the manifold pressure and compressed air rushes backward from the manifold and through the turbocharger. The momentary airflow reversal is not harmful and produces the short pSSHTT sound."

isn't the increased turbo 'sing' terribly annoying while towing or under load for long periods?
