Schedule A or B?

Tried a search on this and found nothing

When I picked up my truck the salesman said "We reccommend you service the truck on the Schedule B program"

I'm sure they do but after reading the conditions I:

Don't have that many days below zero

NO STOP and GO

The only idling I do it at startup and shut down.

Normal Dust

40 mile commute

Limited driving at temps over 90

No towing (Yet)

Non Commercial

No Offroad, NO deserts in NH

I plan on doing the first services on Sch B
but the switch to Sch A after 7,500

Another have any thoughts on this plan?

The temperature criteria is 0C, or 32F. Last time I was there, NH could easily dip below 32F. You "never" drive it less than 10 miles? ever? For food, beer, stuff? Never?

I don't think I know anyone who operates in the sked A region, and even if I fell in the Sked A category, I'd probably still follow the maintenance called for in Sked B.

You can read into the guidelines anything you want to read into them. Its your truck and your investment. I'm sure either A or B will enable most engines to live a long and productive life, but I think that a little more care and feeding of fresh oil etc can only help while incurring a marginal cost increase.

Keven, RTFM. In particular, page 344 of your owners manual, or page 0-6 of the DRM. Unless 04's changed the criteria.

Quite frankly I don't care what sked you follow. I follow B.

I don't recall the specific criteria for A vs. B, but I recall that my impression after reading them was that if you use your truck outdoors, you must use schedule B.

Went in today and had my first oil change at 2500 miles on the Dodge. I asked the service manager at what interval I should have the oil changed in the Cummins. He says not to let it go over 3000 miles and they will change it for only $49.

The parts man offered to sell me standard Mopar oil filters for only $13.50 each by the case and Mopar fuel filters for only $33.58 each by the case.

I see about three more Dino oil changes and then synthetic every 10K with a stratopore oil and fuel filter and I'll change it.

If I was dragging this 10K# trailer every mile it rolled I would do a more severe duty maintenance. I figure at best it'll see 15% towing.

I have used Mobile 1 synthetic for years in my Jeeps with 7500 mile changes and they show no wear.

The next to the last new patrol car I was assigned totaled out. I had to drive a pool car until we could get our new ones ordered in. The pool car and all of our cars had Havoline motor oil at 5K changes and this one had 200K on it when I got it. I put 25K on it until our new cars came in. Still used only a quart every 3500 mi. and that was with Dino oil.

I hope that the Amsol or Mobile synthetic will do the job up to 10k with a filter change midway. I do plan on doing an oil analysis to see. Does anyone have evidence requiring a more strict maintenance? Jim

I'm sure you have already discovered that the prices your local "parts man" are quoting you are a complete and total rip off. Find a local Cummins dealer, Geno's online, or a mafia associated parts store with a hold up man behind the counter and pay less, much less.

Mobil makes a great synthetic oil for diesels, it's called Delvac 1 (Delvac 1300 is the dino version). The Mobil 1 you are accustomed to seeing is not rated for our trucks.

Thanks, I have a link to Geno's and plan on an order soon. I also checked the "Local Cummins Dealer" and was quoted $11.50 for the oil filters, I didn't hang around for a quote on the fuel filter.

I have had no luck in finding the Delvac 1 Syn. oil anywhere local. I do have access to Amsoil, if nothing else online. I am leaning toward the Amsoil. I will probably use the available Mobile Dino Diesel oil that Walmart carries until I reach the mileage necessary to change to Amsoil 15-40 Synthetic.

There is so much variance in the recommendations for service scheduling of the Dodge Ram/ Cummins Turbo diesel. I have had it designated everywhere from 3k to 15K. I wish someone would please gather a consensus and say this is what we should be using if you use your truck at severe duty or this if it is used at a general usage with occasional towing. Jim

Prosouth - I feel your pain. I have done extensive oil analysis and have found every 7,500 miles to be more than adequate on dino or synthetic. I have used Valvoline Premium Blue 15W-40 and Premium Blue Extreme 5W-40. I tow about 10% of the time. I would be careful about extending mileage between oil changes until warranty time is over, but that is me ymmv. These third gen trucks seem to run pretty clean, I have no doubt that I could make it well past 10,000 miles between changes without any fancy filtering.

My suggestion on which schedule to follow would be based on oil analysis. Have your oil analized then that'll give you a good idea when you need to do your changes.
