Rusting rear diff cover

My rear diff is starting to rust really bad in the center and work its way out, is this normal for it being an 06 or could i have gotten it really hot(i tow alot and sometimes haul 20K)? Ive just never noticed it on my old trucks, theve always been rusted out when ive gotten them underneath?

mine did the same they dont prep the cover very well before they paint it. I cleaned my up re painted with non heat paint and changed my lube with 75-140 Red Line been towing 48' goose with LQ and race car and it looks like the day I painted it. I used non heat paint so I can see if it gets hot and starts to peel or burn the paint off and I run the truck hard 75+

Same here. I don't think they cleaned it when they painted at the factory, and what paint they did put on is pretty thin.

If it would have gotten hot enough to actually burn the paint, you probably would have smelled it when you parked.

I'd just crawl under there, degrease it well, and hit it with a rattle can.

Nothing to worry about. If yours wasn't doing it it would be the only one...

I have an '04.5 and my driveshafts are VERY rusty too! I accidently bumped one while under there and got "rained on" with rust particles!
I'm surprised the bar code tags haven't fallen off. But I guess they are the only thing "protecting" certain spots on the driveshafts.

should a person paint the driveshaft so it doesn't continue to rust worse? I wonder if you could go into the dealer & get them to take the diff. cover off, repaint it, & then change out your fluid for it since they had to take it off???

My 3rd member cover is really rusty too. This is the first time this has happen to me on a new truck. Guess I will paint it given that it is so visible on a four-wheel drive. On the other hand, maybe I will just drive it as is and give Chrysler a little free advertising.

My driveshafts are my tranny (NV5600 - so iron) were pretty rusty when I got the truck. Since mine was an '05 I was actually HAPPY to see the rusty trans, which meant it WAS an NV5600 and not the G56 (aluminum). When I did my 2" lift I painted the rear driveshaft but I haven't gotten around to painting the trans. I just hit them with flat black spraypaint. Simple, it protects good enough, and CHEAP. Oh, my diff covers are fine BTW.... no rust at all. Guess I got a "good batch"

I was thinking Warranty work - being it is a new truck & it would cause pre-mature wear.

Yeah mine did the same thing on my 03. Just have them repaint it, under warranty. Also have them check the fluid leve in it, mine came 2qts low from the factory.
