Rough Idle ONLY sometimes???
My '05 does this too. I can't find any rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes it goes weeks or months without doing it, and then sometimes it does it off and on for days on end. I have looked into fuel supplier, filter change interval, addative or not, etc. I can't figure it out, but at about 99,000 miles I can't find any adverse affects either. My last oil sample said the motor is better than average at its milage.
I am 99% sure that is an injector that is not firing. I guess this because it runs the exact same way when the dealership diables a cylinder with the DRB. And there is never any white smoke (indication of an injector stuck open).
I have had it in multiple times for troubleshooting, thou it never does it with them there. For a while it was happening every time I ran the motor for more than 45 minutes, but I think that was a fluke as that has no bearing on it now. Until the injector fails I think I am SOL...
I put up with this intermittant problem for over a year. Had it to the dealer twice, he replaced two injectors and a wiring harness. Problem did not go away. It would do it cold or after stopping at a rest area at least once out of 20 or so crank ups. Then one day I decided to try Diesel Kleen by Power Service. Many on the forums use it and when I visited Wal-Mart I found they stock it in different size bottles, it must be a good seller! I'm using the stuff in the gray bottle now at every fill up in my 05 model.
I have not had another incident since using this stuff. It must have been an injector hanging up and not firing. I waited two months before reaching the conclusion that it had worked.

Same here, Diesel Kleen clears it right up. More prone in the winter to do it then the summer. I am not replacing an injectors when the cleaner clears it up. I am more prone to says its' crappy fuel!!
I have the same issue with my 03 and I even installed a FASS fuel pump/filter system. I did notice when the engine was missing the FASS was surging. I checked the water seperator and not one drop of water. I'm guessing that the fuel is in good shape after going through the FASS. Do the cam sensors go bad often?
I noticed the same problem on my 06 about a year after I got it. I also noticed that it happened as soon as I started using the new ultra low sulfer diesel. Did my homework and found out the ULSD was the cause (read it in another forum). Now I put 2% bio-diesel in with every tank and no more shakes. Seems to preform better too.
I have an intermittent rough idle also. I use Power Service at every fillup, but still get the rough idle. When it does it I dont notice any more smoke than usual. Is there any way to check the injectors even when the problem isnt happening? (I have a scanner)
I've still got this happening, and I've tried the PS/MMO mix, MMO only, PO only, and now a quart of 2 stroke on every tank. It's worse with nothing, and best with 2 stroke - but it's still there.
My oil analysis keeps coming back better than normal too. This last one was at 8500 miles on regular old Valvoline Premium Blue.
So whatever is causing this, it's not putting oil or anything else into the oil - which I think a leaking injector would be.

Every once in awhile I get a rough idle, it usually always accompanies a longer than normal start up. But the truck hasn't showed me any indications something is wrong so it has done this for a couple of years off and on between months at a time.
