Replaced ball joints now axle leaking
Replaced ball joints now axle leaking
A week ago I replaced the ball joints on the drivers side of my truck, everything worked great. Sat I did the pass side and now I have gear oil coming out all over on that axle. Only drove it about 20 miles since then. So do you guys think i might be able to take it back apart and slide the axle some or go in from gearbox and fix without having to replace? Hoping the seal just got folded the wrong way or a little wrinkle and didn't break.
I have a trip planned this weekend and was suppose to drive my truck so if I can get a temp fix this would be great.

Well I can think of two things that it could be.
1 - Some oil came out of diff into axle tube and thats what you are seeing.
Park truck with that side lower and see how much oil comes out.
2 - you torn the seal putting the axle back in.
Depending how bad its torn it will let oil out slow or fast.
Same method as above for checking, big puddle big tear, little puddle small tear or #1
My son's truck has the same issue, it leaks slowly, been checking once a month and the level doesn't change very much. Unless its pouring out, check level in diff before your trip and away go you. Pulling the axle again may cause more issues than it can solve.

Its coming out fast enough that the whole under fender and shock area is wet. None ran out when I did the drivers side so I would think it wouldn't have on pass side. I cleaned it off so I'll drive it some and see if any more comes out.
thanks

Sorry to hear that, sounds like the seal is damaged. The seal is cheap but it takes a bit to change it. According to manual you need to pull diff apart to get to it, time consuming. If its not leaking to bad take your trip and deal with it when you get home. Check level once in awhile.
Checked gear oil today and it was good. After driving it a little there looks to be a small wet spot now. So maybe what leaked pass the seal has made its way out the shaft. We shall see tomorrow.
