Reinforcing / Caging Fuel Tank?!?
Reinforcing / Caging Fuel Tank?!?
So I have a question for you all: Maybe I am getting a little paranoid, but with fuel prices escalating everyday and thieves getting more and more deperate, the news sources have reported that the "new thing" is where crooks will 'punch' a fuel tank and drain the diesel/gas out of it and split. This is happening more and more everyday. So, my question is this; has anyone thought of how hard it would be, or does anyone manufacture a kit now, that would encompass basiacally the 3 sides of the fuel tank that are exposed under the Dodge Ram (since one side is already blocked from access by the body/frame)? How hard would it be to do something like this yourself with a little ingenuity and backyard mech skills? Just a thought and would like to know your ideas...pro's and con's.
Thanks, Mike.
Thanks, Mike.
Rockcrawler,
I am headed down to San Diego here in the next month for an extended stay. I think I am going to draw up some plans and take them into a custom metal fab place and ask them to make me a "one-off" if you will. I will keep you posted.
Alas, I see in your signature line you are running Mexico's finest #2. Any issues? Since I am headed South next month I figure I will be doing the same on the Baja coast. I have a 75 gallon TFI in bed tank as a supp.
Thanks in advance.

Cool. Please keep me posted.
As for the mexico diesel, I have had no problems. And as for getting it south of California, be careful because I have heard they are very strict comming back into the US. Here it is not a problem but there the customs is making it very hard. Something about the quality of fuel not meeting cali standards. Just ask the locals there and I am sure you will get the better information.
I know what you need to do. Make a tin cover that covers the bottom of your tank. Make sure it is mounted away from any chassis grounds. Then go to Circuit City and get a 6 farad capacitor and hook it to the tin cover. Once they touch it some man-made lightning will teach them a lesson!
I live in the boonies and I have a 95LB chocolate lab running inside his radio fence or I would do as I described above. I would love nothing more than to see the thief passed out under my truck with a cordless drill in his hand
