AAM axles uses a gray marking pigment on there ring and pinion and axles. That's why the oil looks crappy. Has nothing to due with the rear end being bad or inferior fluids.

The AAM axles wear in different than other axles. During wear in process they can get up to 600* F. This is one of the reasons AAM wants you to change out the factory fluid at I beleave 15,000 miles. That and to get other metal contaminents out of the rear end from the wear in process. After the axles have been properly wore in the temps come way down.

Bluebull, what you are saying makes perfect sense. But im curious how you know this? Have you read something somewhere (link?) or do you work for AAM or know somebody that does? I have just never heard it before.

Just a little history first. I have two good friends from childhood back in the 60's and 70's. We all have automotive training. They now both have sons. All of us have been gearheads, wrench slingers, whatever you want to call us. Those boys are like my own sons since I don't have any. Both of these young guys, (almost 30 years old) work for a chrysler dealership only in different towns. They go workshops sponsored by DC. This is one of the things that was brought up at one of those workshops.

Hope this helps.

Absolutely 100% NOT TRUE! If it is not labeled as recycled oil, it isn't. A large chain distributor like Wal*Mart contracts with a major oil company. Their supplier could change from time to time, but it is quality oil, with the label changed, sold at a discounted price because of volume.

Couldn't be any further from the truth. Some employees couldn't sell the last jelly roll in the show case to a cop. Hey Larry that ones for you.

Thanks. Yep that cleared it up. And what you said made perfect sense about the gray fluid. I am definately glad I changed mine out at 15k though. Prob gonna stick with a 20k interval now because the Mobil 1 looks like brand new when I drained it at 30k and 50k.

the stuff I saw in walmart was pennzoil synthetic 75w/90 and was $4.44 each. Im having mine done on saturday at a non chain LOF place I found here that does all vehicles but mainly commercial fleets and RV's. Synthetic rated for limited slip diffs $45 for the rear, and $35 for the front. DC dealer wanted $130 per axle

I'm getting ready to do my diffs...I also remember reading somewhere that the diff's should be service @ 15K.....I know we have the 11.5 rears...And I'm assuing we have Trac-Rites and not Trac-Loks?? Whats under our front ends?? Don't think I've ever determined what axle I'm rolling on...

Just did mine today, and oil looked fine, no shavings, no gray color...
Looked worn, but not bad at all @44k miles, no clue if the previous owner changed it or not though, but ive owned it for 10k miles...

Ok...I'm confused. How can Chrysler spec Synthetic ONLY and then say oil with a GL-5 Rating. All the oils I could find are GL-5 compliant. Does that mean that all GL-5 oils are synthetic??? I just don't get the synthetic requirement if they also give a GL-5 standard which is avaliable in non-synthetic. It sounds like they are contradicting themselves. Am I just confusing my self here... ?

Looks like I need to go return my Valvoline 75w-90 oil for way over priced stuff that has the exact same rating....

Isn't the Valvoline synthetic? I think the GL-5 stuff is all synthetic. If it is a GL-5 rated synthetic oil in 75w90 you should be fine.

Yours is a 2nd gen and it has a Dana Axle. All the 3rd gens use AAM axles and they require GL-5 rated Synthetic gear oil. You can buy the oil almost anywhere....NAPA, Ghettozone, Walmart. And you do not need any kind of additive or anything with the AAMs on our trucks. The Dana axles on 2nd gens I believe do.
