Rear differential leaking
Like the title says it looks like its leaking. It looks like its leaking where the drive shaft goes into the pumpkin. The fluid level looks good. Is it just a seal problem or is there any other possible issues there? Is this a major problem? How hard is it to change? Thanks in advance.

Over filling knocks out seals pretty fast. Level is suppose to be about a 1/2" below the hole.
Pinion seal isn't that hard to change. Need to go to the dealer and get a new seal and nut. Need a serious duty impact to break the nut lose.

I don't buy that...they told me that as well. But they replaced my diff oil themselves, and it still ended up leaking. THe dealer just says this to divorce themselves from any blame. The first time mine started leaking it was stock diff cover and fluid fill.

Ah the pinion seal, the reason I got to put a new rear end in my truck. Yep had a leak didn't notice, drove down road and the rest was a very sad story for the rear end of the truck. For such a cheap seal it causes some big $$$ repairs. Thought I pulled it over in time but nope, went to load it on a tow truck and had already caused lock up, needless to say I watch that sucker like a hawk now

Is that usually covered be a warranty? My truck is an 04 so it should be out of warranty. I am heading to the mountains this week. Do you think it will be ok if I keep a close eye on the fluid level and worry about it when I get back.

I think you should be fine if you watch it, the morning my seal blew and fried the rear end should not have happened. I truck tried warning me, the rear end felt funny as I left the house. Had I shut it down and checked it then everything would have been fine, after a cheap seal replacement. But in a hurry at 5 a.m. and still sleepy I blew it off and sure enough 15 miles down the road heard the pop and saw the smoke in my mirrors. So instead of a cheap seal I wound up with a $2200 bill for a new rear end and no truck for 2 days

As far as I know it's just the rear pinion seal. That is what blew on mine, does it appear to be leaking at all around the differential cover? if so you might look into that as well. I had always seen alittle oil around the rear cover but it was never much so always ignored it. I check mine now weekly to make sure no leaks. Even though I drove the truck 120,000 before my original seal went, I am not going to let it happen again.
