Rear Diff ?

Just finished (I Think) changing the fluid in the rear diff. I drained the old stuff (it was nasty) put it all back together and started putting the new Mobil 1 75-90 synthetic back in. I only got a little over 3 quarts in before it started coming out of the fill hole... Does this sound like it was enough fluid? I took a little bit out to get it 1/4 inch below the fill hole.

Thanks in advance!

Check your glove box for the size differential, given your truck specs I'm thinking the 10½". The fluid capacity is:
10½" - 4.75 pints
11½" - 7.65 pints

Good luck!

It's a 10.5 rear end...

If my conversion is correct -

4.75 Pints = 2.375 Quarts

I'll check the level again to make sure it's good. I will probably need to take a little more out...

Thanks for the help!

Roadie, if you filled it to the hole you're good to go.

If you absolutely feel the need to remove some oil, pull the plug for a few minutes and let the fluid find the level at the bottom of the hole.

FWIW, my little 9.25" front diff took 2.75 quarts, so your "little over 3 quarts" doesn't sound wrong for a 10.5". The book values are "nominal".

Filling diff's ain't rocket science.

The full mark is the bottom of the check plug hole, always.

According to the manual, the oil level should be 1/4" below the drain hole, + or - 1/4". In other words, the level should be 0" to 1/2" below the drain hole, so you are right in the middle. I fill mine up just until the oil starts dribbling out a little, then put the plug back in...good to go.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll check it and add a little to get it to the fill hole. Thanks again!
