Rear axel bearings

Last October I changed the rear gear oil in my 2005, 2500, A/T, 2wd.
When I took the cover off, about one and one half quarts of gear oil drained
out. Did not think much of this, other than they did not fill it up to 3.6 qts.

Make along story short, A noise coming from the rear I was hearing over all the other noises. Took it to my regualer mechanic and after he drove it, definitely a rear noise.

After taking it apart, all the bearings were gone in the were messed up, lots of metal in the pumpkin. He was told that "do not replace" the bearings with OEM. He put in timinkins. supposed to be the best. Also had to put on new brake pads, with all the gear oil that leaked out through
the oil seals.

The bottom line, someone else, previously owner took it to dealer for all maintenance work, they left the old oil seal in, pounded in a new oil seal and it was not seated properly. Hence, the rear gear oil was leaking out slowly. Sure wish I would have recognised the loss of gear oil.

It cost me 1,357. for parts and labor from my regular mechanic, out the door price. I think it was a fair price, any comments on this? And I hope you do not have to go through this replacement.

I have 119,200 miles on the truck.

Hope this helps. Listen for those bearings going bad and catch them before spending a lot of money, unless you do it youself.
