Puffing white smoke on takeoff

Hey guys, just got my first diesel after many years dreaming for one. 07 5.9 with 109k. Had it a week and now it's blowing white smoke when I leave a stop in 2nd and 3rd gears. Clears up after that. Also, if I bump the throttle at idle it will puff out the smoke. Pulled the dipstick and it barely smells like diesel. Not over filled. Changed fuel filter and had a tiny bit of water but not bad. Anyway, any help would be appreciated!!

A few quick questions to help us out:

Is this a cold running problem?
Does this happen after the engine is at operating temp?
Is the grid heater cycling? OR is it disconnected? Watch the voltmeter at start-up for a 4-6VDC drop when the heater cycles on.
Define "barely" smells like diesel??
Do you know the road/maintenance history?

Seems to be happening at all temps. Grid heater seems to be working, def drop in volts when cold. When I pulled the dipstick I could barely smell diesel. I was thinking I had some leftover on my hands from fuel filter change. Don't know much history about the truck. Bought used from a lot. Judging by the rest of the truck, I think it was kept up pretty well. Fuel filter looked pretty fresh and oil looks good. The car lot told me they didn't do any maintenance on it. But who knows for sure!! Lol

Do a paper test of the oil. Put a drop on a paper towel. Let it set for a while. If there is any diesel in the oil it will make a second lighter ring around the oil. If there is a second ring then you probably have an injector that is hanging open. This could cause major damage if not corrected as it will wash down the cylinder.

Update!!! Truck went to dealer. Made it 2.5 miles on test drive an started knocking!! Tore it apart and found it had been apart before, and, one piston had the rings on upside down, rod bearing cap came loose, and the piston slapped the valves. Welcome to the diesel world!!!! Gettin her fixed. Not looking forward to the bill though. Anybody else have any horror stories like this?? Lol
