Possible to swap 2005 engine into 2003 or 2004 chassis?
Can you swap the 2005 CR complete with ecu into a 2003, 2004 chassis? Wiring differences, is the body control module and 05 ecu compatible?
Has anyone done this?
Are the heads physically the same??? Meaning to use 03 or 04 injectors in a 05 head?
If they are physically the same then it would be possible to to use the complete wiring, ecm and everything off a 03/04 engine onto the 2005?

Irs more a problem of functional differences between the computers in the years than the wiring. The peripheral computers are keyed to the main ECU and a VIN so swapping becomes problematic.
You can take the whole engine mines VC cover and electronics and drop it into the 03-04 chassis and it will run, not correctly but it will run. The 05's uses a different injector spray pattern and piston bowl that is optimized to the 05 programs. When trying run the later design on the early computers it tends to smoke more and not work as well as possible. You will need to move the timing around, adjust rail pressure, maybe change cam, to get away from the smoke and other issues.
It can be done but its not easy for optimum results.

I have a super low mile 04 motor that I would trade to you for your 05 motor. I tried to put it in a 04.5 and was nothing but issues. If want to know anything about it or what to look for to make if work give me a call 586-212-1273 Jim

its more of the spray patern and injector cycles that the ecm uses. the ecm does recogonize the vin of what truck it was used for. you have to get it reprogramed with the new trucks vin

Hey there. I have a 2006 in my 2003 right now. I couldn't find a decent engine in the 2003/4 range to swap in, and I needed my truck back.
****If I did this again I would have swapped an early 6.7. I think the bowl shape would have worked way better with the 2003 ecm and injectors. You have to use 5.9 2003/4 injector I think...there is something about fitment in the head...can't remember as I didn't go that route. In another 25 years I guess I'll have to look for one lol. I thought the 6.7 is a different block but externally I read they are the same as the 5.9....wish I'd have known.
I used 2004.5+ Injectors. I used the 2006 turbo. You can jumper the wastegate to +12 (Hot when ignition on) to allow boost to hit around 30 psi. I still have the 2003 ecm and trans controller. I learned by reading that in 2004.5 they integrated these two into one box and there were other changes as well. I used the 2003 lift pump and the 2006 high pressure fuel system.
I did swap the upper part of the valve cover to match the injector wiring plugs. Otherwise it's a 2006 engine, through and through. Except I think the cam sensor plug has to be swapped out to the 2004.5+ one...or swap the sensor to the 2003 one. Small bell ringing on that one.
The truck does smoke a bit under hard load..I'm planning to get an exhaust temp guage and then attempt to tune this out. It's not important enough that I have done it though-It's been years since the swap.
It doesn't idle quite as smootly...
But it pulls hard enough for me and all other aspects seem fine. All in with a new set of injectors I was at $7500 which is way cheaper than any other option I had at the time.
I did get hp tuners to try to tune the 2003 ecm to the 2005 numbers...but that was a no-go as the 2005 uses the numbers in a different fashion than the 2003 so you can't do a direct copy, even compensating for the different column headings etc.
But the swap does work.
