Pic request: 04.5+ drain tube
Pic request: 04.5+ drain tube
Anybody have a picture of the turbo drain tube on an 04.5 and up HE351 turbo? I swapped one onto my 03 and the drain tube is different. I have the right drain tube now, but want to make sure I have all other needed parts before tearing it apart.
Picture showing the entire tube assembly from the turbo to the motor if you have it.

I don't have a picture, but having done the swap myself a few years back...
My 03 turbo drain tube was a solid metal, curved tube that connected to the snorkel on the block with about a 4" long hose. The 05 turbo's drain tube was a metal accordian/flex type tube, which I did not use because of the possibility of it becoming bent or smashed to the point of obstructing flow. If the drain is not free flowing, it will back up oil into the turbo and cause a leaky mess.
Where my memory is not so sure, it seems the one tube was attached to the turbo with two bolts and a gasket, through ears on the drain tube, and the other one threaded into the turbo's main body... just not sure which was which or if I am thinking of my SPS62?
Just make sure which ever one you use has all vertical flows, nothing even resembling a horizontal bend, and no kinks or obstructions and you will be ok.

When I upgraded the turbo to a NEW HE351, I also installed a Pacbrake. I now have oil "leaking" at the turbo outlet (pressure) hose when the exhaust brake is engaged.
The research I have done leads me to believe that the outlet tube I used (Stock 03 turbo) is smaller than the drain tube from the 04.5+ trucks.
I picked up the new drain tube yesterday and it is the accordian style. According to the parts list, the drain tube itself is the only different part number between the two turbos/years.
I read somewhere that the HE351 requires a larger drain tube or oil will pool and will seap or leak, which is what I have going on.
Once I replace this drain tube, IF I still have the same problem, then it looks like I'll be replacing "O" rings inside the turbo.
This is where I'm at.

When you apply the Pacbrake, this is forcing your turbine wheel and turbo shaft forward, I suspect the thrust bushing on the compressor end has been compromised. Was this a brand new HE351? If so, how long did you allow for break in? There have been many discussions about pacbrakes and turbo failures, not sure what I think about it.
This sucks, because now you have oil going into your innercooler+, this all has to be cleaned out.
If it is a brand new turbo, and the present drain is not restricted, you may try putting some miles on it without using the pacbrake, and see if the thrust bushing will seal up....
