Yesterday it was a bit chilly (for California anyway), I start my truck and the Check Engine light is on. The code is P0514, something to do with the battery temperature sensor.

Since when do I care about the temperature of the battery for charging? For a hundred years we've been charging batteries by a difference of potential. It seems to have been working fine.

Does anyone know if I can remove or bypass this ridiculous thing?

Just ignore it and it will go away on it's own. Seriously.

Even if you clear the code, it will prob come back. Then, at least my experience, it will go away after a few times of cranking your truck.

I wouldn't worry about it unless your truck is not running right.

Truck is running fine. Was afraid I would have to move to Phoenix so my batteries could stay warm.

Went to the dealer yesterday and they installed new sensor, I think it was covered by a TSB 18-037-04, they also flashed the controller

Funny thing...I just bought a new "06" I now have 236 miles on it...went out for one of those go nowhere drives and crap the check engine light comes on! Makes you wanna puke!...well came home and it had the P0514 Battery Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance code...We have had some cold nights here...17 or so. I see it is a no big deal but who wants a CEL starring at them on a new rig? It appeared to me the voltage gage was a tad higher than my other CTD's I checked it and got 14.88....is the voltage acceptable? Any other feedback on this code would be appricated!

My 0514 code has come on about 4 times this winter. If I don't plug in, I never see it. Had it plugged in last night and it showed up again this mirning. I ignore it and the CE light goes out after 10 restarts. Spring will be here soon and then I'll forget about it again until next winter.

Hmmm....mine was plugged in....I'll let it go and see how often I get the CEL. I believe i'll mention it to the dealer and see how they respond. They can fix it if they can when I get it serviced. Thanks!

Hmmm, interesting link between the 0514 code and having the block heater plugged in. I just so happened to have the block heater plugged in the night before. (mostly so I can get warm air from the heater sooner) But the CEL didn't come on when I left for work in the morning, it came on when I left the shop to come home in the evening. Seems like this may be more of a nuisance that anything else.

I have had that BS code since Dec of 02,I disable it from having the light come on although the code is still present.

Like "MoparKen" - I just got P-0514 today.
Also, like Ken, I am in Kali-fornia (Orange Co.). It has been cold
-for here- the last few nights. A couple of days ago, I thought
I would see if the block heater had any meaningful impact on the
temp gauge when I started it (couldn't see/tell any difference).

Tried the check, 'cause I do have a MT trip coming up in a bit.

I see the guys in "real" cold climates are probably using (needing?)
the block heaters - and throwing this code a lot.

Soooooo - wondering if running the block heater -or- simply the
cold(er) weather had anything to do with it. Darn thing is probably
spoiled here in So. Cal - warm weather, easy starts, etc. [LOL].

BTW - years ago I had an '85 Ferd with the Int'l 6.9 eng. Had a block
heater on that that I used at my cabin in local mtns when it got down
to zero and slightly above. Helped out the starts - but wasn't really
necessary . . . . .but never had to worry about codes!
[Of course a good running VW could beat me for an eighth of a mile
from any stoplight - in any weather!]

Its a batt temp rationale code. looks for tem increase of 5 degrees when alternator starts charging. Ive seen this code thousands of times since 2003.

ignore it...there is no fix and you can replace the batt temp sensor 100X, and it will still come back. I relocated mine....hasnt come back since..

Boy's there is a TSB out for this on the 06's only. The # for the TSB is 18-005-06. That is supposed to fix the problem on the 06. I can't tell you if it works or not. I havn't had mine done yet. By the way. The one time that I got this code on mine, was when The truck had sat for 5 day's with the block heater plugged in. To tell you the truth, I don't know if any of this makes any sence to why the code comes on other than a computer glitch that needs fixed by D/C.

for me, it was after 5 starts.
Will try the "relocation" plan if it comes back!

Where are you relocating to. I think I read somewhere it is under the pass. side batt. Is this right? Mine showed up about 2 weeks ago. Truck started running bad off idle and died. Restarted it and check engine light was on. Killed it and check for codes and had this p0514. Been running fine ever since.
