Oil Change (again)

On sched B, at 3,750 miles there is no oil and filter change EXCEPT for those poor soles with California LEV (235hp) Engines.
Just checks and inspetions. At 7,500 you do change them.
The Cummins ISB Owners Manual has the Oil Drain Interval for Rec vehicles at 15,000 miles/500 hours. Even the "All Others" is 9000 miles/500 hours, (unless the engine is operated commerically below 25 mph then it ranges from 9000 down to 1500 miles)

How much for the Horse?

Does he come with a saddle, bridel, spurs and whip ?

I'm looking for one to use during my spare time.

I'm going to use Amsoil 15-40 Synthetic with their By-Pass Oil Filter System and find me a dead horse to beat with the spare time I will have from not chaging my oil every month. lol Jim

You may want to wait to change the oil so that your engine can break in a little better.

A diesel is BUILT to run longer.

The Cummins Operators Manual says if you are running a Shuttle Bus at average of 2-4 mph you change the oil at 1500 miles/500hours. At 4-6mph 3000miles/500hrs.
The only other time you would change at 3000/500 is if you're operating a Refuse Trk, Mixer or dump trk below10 mph average.

It's just not necessary to baby it.

I dont agree at all. For the first few oil changes I believe that its important to change the oil OFTEN....perhaps at 1000, 2000, and 5000. the reason being that they can never get out all of the cuttings and debris left over from the machining process, ie oil passages etc. This info. was passed to me from a Cummins mechanic.

Even Dodge Maint Logbook says you don't change the oil until 7,500/500 unlesss you're from CA.

I agree with th' Dr.

I changed mine at 2500 because of debris that could have been left during assembly and I feel that the seating of the components will give off more debris during the first 1K or so miles.

I know the oil filter should catch the debris but I still want to remove the contaminates asap from my oil system.

This is the same reason I plan on the Amsoil By-pass system and synthetic oil. It is not as much for the super extended oil change mileage, but because I believe it will maintain a cleaner internal environment for the Cummins.

When I got out of high school I worked for Eaton Transmission building Raodranger 13 speeds for the big trucks. Believe me this was not a hospital environment. So I plan on a fluid change in the Ram transmission as well as the rear end. Jim

I really dont care what the DC log book says.....you have to ask yourself how long do I want to keep this truck? If the answer is "until the wheels fall off", then you might want to follow this piece of advice instead of the DC log book.

I have my oil analyzed for all my changes. First was 12k. ALL my numbers are the same across the board. I thought my first couple would be high but they are not. How many oil related failures do you hear about with a Cummins engine?? They are a medium duty engine. Treat them as such.

Your engine does not have a break-in oil from the factory. It will not break in properly only if you switch to synthetic too soon. You should wait until a minimum of 15,000-20,000 miles before switching to synthetic. It will not hurt to change your oil at 2000 miles using dino oil. I changed mine at 2000, 5000 and every 5000 miles there after.
