All off road is , is , on road with die added . That said if the dealer finds it he will void warranty . I just lost a turbo and some injectors and the first thing they did was take a fuel sample to see if it had off road in it . It also takes 3 or 4 tanks after off road to clear system .
Had a go around with a GM dealer about off road fuel. The technician indicated that off road would void warranty. Told him BS show me in writing. Couldn't do it. This was pre ULSD.
On the other hand, if the law catches you running off road, they willget in your wallet, real real deep.

Don't even use it in my tractor. It's a pain to go get only open limited hours. Not only can you get a big fat ticket if caught running RED but you will also get a visit from the IRS............. OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe he is running a ranch only truck.... That is not totally uncommon around here.
Second hand information, but last I heard (before ULSD) that the off road stuff was normal sulfur, and the street fuels were low sulfur. So technically the offroad fuels had more lubricity.... last I heard that was years ago...
With the ULSD thing I would not be surprised if EVERYTHING was ULSD, cause a mistake could ruin a newer engine.

For several weeks after hurricane Katrina the only diesel available was the red fuel. The government had to be lobbied hard to allow that otherwise the trucking industry would have ground to a screeching halt the other fuel was practically non-existant. I ran through a couple of thousand gallons of the stuff. It won't hurt your truck (unless its a 6.7) the only difference is the dye. Not sure if it is 3000ppm sulfur or 500ppm I think recently it was dropped down to 500ppm and eventually offroad diesel will go the way of highway diesel and be 15ppm only when they get around to regulating emissions on farm and construction equipment. It's coming..

Question, Do you complaine when you hit a pothole in the road?? I know I do, at least I am doing my part to get it fixed
not to make this too political but do you think the billions of $$$ that are collected from federal and local pump fuel taxes and trucking co. fees and taxes really end up being spent on road repair? if so why do many major cities (many with the highest fuel taxes in the country) claim that they simply don't have any money to keep up with their roads? i live in a county with very little tax revenue (and sales tax under 3%) and somehow our road and bridge dept. does a fine job of road maintenance and snow removal while the larger cities near us are always crying poverty even with massive tax revenue and near 8% sales tax.
From what i've been told, the higher sulfur red fuel can only be run in off road equipment that has never or could never have been registered as a motor vehicle. There is a dyed LS fuel that rock quarrys and like companies use in older trucks that have been "retired" from the road and put on lite duty watering the roads around the pit, etc. I deliver all these different fuels, and yes there really is a difference and it is a pain in the *%% trying to keep them seperate on the busy days. You're right. There needs to be some congressional mandate or law that stipulates all fuel tax revenues, license tags fees, excise taxes on truckers, speeding tickets can only be used for highway maintinence and upgrades. Unfortunately there isn't and with few exceptions most state goverments tend to spend these moneys on wasteful useless socail programs. That said it seems to me unfair to all the honest folks out there who do pay their share of fuel taxes for some to get a free ride not to mention the fact it's against the law. I just hope you don't get caught cause it's not cheap. I was coming into our terminal one time in my big truck about 5 miles from the yard when i rolled up on a surprise fuel inspection on the shoulder of the highway. they were pulling over truckers, farmers, everyone with diesels. I've never seen it before or since and my understanding is it's extremely rare but I sure would not want to get caught running the red stuff.
Fuel is checked here all the time in the big truck, but the only small ones that are bothered are the ones with a name on the door or an animal trailer on the back. They also set up outside farm auctions, equipment auctions, etc to catch the poor farmer who must have grabbed the wrong pump handle. Both my 5.9 have the "C" and the "Cummins Turbo Diesel" removed via hairdryer and fishing line.
And the only way to fix the problom would be to toss out 98% of congress and that would mean overthrowing the goverment,not that I have a problom with that,matter of fact I'll can bring the rope to hang the traitors.
Not complaining not to much,when you come down to it I am using there laws and loop holes to (Delete) them right back.

If you run a truck on the road there is no permit that makes it legal to run off road . Filling up at a off road pump in no way makes it legal and either does farm tags . Most farmers can fill out for a tax credit for taxed fuel used off road , gas used in a tractor , but filling out one for taxed diesel used on road is illegal . The fine for doing such would fill many , many pot holes . Wouldn't it be a wonderful country if we could all get the other guy to pick up the bill for us . No one likes paying taxes , it is just the price we pay to live in this wonderful country , many have paid a lot more .
