Noobie with ??'s
I have had my 03 2500 HO for about 2 weeks now, and was wonderin' if I am just imagining things changin' or if they have been this way from the beginning.

1) When I start the truck, I let it warm for about 30-45 seconds before I take off. For the first few minutes (4-5) it seems to have a noticeable "rattling" sound at around 1200-1300 RPMs. It is a different sound from all other RPMs. It does go away after the truck is warm, but it is concerning me. Any ideas what it is, and if it could be a problem?

2) When I turn the truck off, usually after letting it idle for 20-30 seconds like I should, it shudders kinda' violently - the whole truck shakes. A problem?

3) It appears that there is the possibility to put a gas nozzle into the opening of the tank. I have never had a diesel before and am kinda' concerned about not thinking sometime and pulling up to the pump and accidently filling with gas. Has anyone ever done that?

4) I thought that the 03's were supposed to be quiet? EVERY time that I pull into a drive thru, I get something like "I can't hear you because your truck is too loud, sir". How do you guys with performance mods and probably louder trucks than mine handle drive thrus?

Thanks,
1. No problem - odd noises coming and going in a diesel are pretty common - especiaslly as they warm up and break in.
2.It's the excellent compression sealing of the long-stroke Cummins - perfectly normal - but if you don't want to eventually shake the doors off their hinges, always shut the motor down BEFORE opening the doors!
3. Yes - but the lesson is usually well and expensively learned the FIRST time you do it...
4. It's still a diesel - some are noisier than others, and some drive-thrus are more sensitive to backround noises than others...
Yer OK - nothing to worry about, sit back and DRIVE that sucker!

I don't want to share it with you)
4) change drivethrus. This diesel is quiet. go drive an '02...
Re:Noobie with ??'s
1) It's normal , The pre injection that quiet the engine work best at idle

2)Typical of high compression engines

3)Yes I have filled it up with unleaded - drove it 20 miles when it quit. Amazingly enough all I did is drain the tank, put diesel in, replace fuel filter, loosen injector caps, crank over for a minute, tighten caps & start--let's see a ford do that!

4)I find if I pull forward just past the intercom 2-3 feet & speak up works well --This sometimes even works with my 2nd g's

Your welcome

Re:Noobie with ??'s
For some reason that no one seems to know the pilot injection doesnt work when you first start up cold, thats what is giving you the extra cackle at startup and goes away when it warms up. Some folks have reported this at other times as well though I only see it when cold. Its normal for your truck. Gary covered the other points pretty well, enjoy your new ride.
Re:Noobie with ??'s
Thanks for the affirmations that all is as it should be...

Any of you guys with modified exhausts... Are they louder all around the truck or just at the tip?

Thanks again,
Re:Noobie with ??'s
Having had mine for about a month now...all of that seems pretty normal to me.

At drive throughs I typically either shut it down or just yell really loud. ;D

Oh yeah....don't fill it up with unleaded.

Everything is NORMAL. If you think the 03 is loud. Drive an 02 and you'll never complain that it's loud again.

Remember it is a diesel and there are trade off's. If you want dead quiet you'll have to go back to gas.
