new diesel owner...

Well I have finally decided to buy a diesel Ram, found a left over 06 for a great deal ($15k off sticker) and am wanting to jump on it. Its a QC 2500 4X4 auto. I am just curious before jumping into a diesel truck a few things I;ve been wondering...

1. Whats the maintenance like on a Cummins compared to a gasser? I was going to get a Hemi 2500 till I found this bad boy. I just have never owned a diesel and hear they can be more $$$ to keep going even though they last forever.

2. Is this 4 speed auto going to last behind the Cummins HO?

3. Do these newer Cummins really only average about 16 mpg or so?

I am just looking for adivce or FYI because I have never owned a diesel and this is all new to me. I don't plan on modding the engine, but I do want a leveling kit and 35s, haha.

You wouldn't like the Hemi for towing... I think the only gasser that can hold a candle to the CTD is the 8L V-10

Once you go diesel (CTD) - you'll never go back!

Your resale value alone will make the extra $$$ worth it. And yes, ANY 3/4 or 1 ton truck will cost more to maintain than a light-duty. Parts simply cost more. They also tend to be more durable and last for many more miles. And while that '06 is inexpensive now, they'll soon be sought-after as the last year before the dreaded '07 emissions regulations. you won't regret a Cummins purchase!

As far as #3 goes, I typically get 17 or 18 MPG (hand calculated, mostly hwy) on my 06 and it isn't fully broken in yet. As for the HEMI, my boss has one on his 1500 and his gas mileage is closer to 12 MPG, on a good day. Go with the diesel, you won't regret it.

Get the Cummins.

1. Routine maintenance costs are about twice as much, but still relatively inexpensive. Oil change is about $40 for parts and I change mine every 7500 miles. I also change my fuel filter at the same time, and they are about $10 a pop. Other than that not much different from a gasser.

B. Mine is holding up just fine and I'm not afraid to beat on it a bit while loaded, unloaded or towing.

4. Even though my Megacab gets lower fuel economy than most, its still better than my Titan did!
