Need recommendation for exhaust set up

I just purchased an 06 Mega with the 5.9 and I am looking for a recommendation for an exhaust kit. What are most of you guys running on your 5.9's? I want to run a kit from the turbo back. Here are my questions?

1. 4" inch or 5" inch? Pros and cons of each?
2. cat left on or removed?
3. Muffler on or no muffler?

I used to run a 5" kit on an 04 ford powerstroke without the cat but with the muffler and I loved the sound of it because it sounded like a jet not a tractor. What set up would allow me to accomplish the same sound? I do like a load kit

thanks for your input

Well your not gonna get the PS VGT sound out of the 5.9L stock turbo.

Unless you are going to mod to well over 500hp a 5" is not necessary unless you just want a louder deeper exhaust sound.

I would do a cat delete and a high flow muffler first and see how you like it. Cheap enough and that may be all you want.

Just my .02.

THis is what I did, and I'm still happy with it two and a half years later.

I put a 5" mbrp on a few months back - veryyy happy. I like the sound, but its by no means 'quiet'. The muffler it comes with is very free flowing. The whole kit bolted up no problem. Only hard part was getting the old system off.

Hey loanman,

Congrats on your new purchase...The 06 Mega's are the best trucks of all time...

Seriously, go with the 5", I never have heard anybody say "I shoulda got the 4"

I don't like cats, and the muffler with my Magnaflow doesn't really count as a muffler if you ask me

I've heard some people say the 5" MBRP loses HP down in the low RPM range vs. the 4". I can't think of why that might be though...kinda weird if you ask me and no one has given me a good scientific explanation. Anyway, I've read it and the guy at NADP (www.nadp.ca) told me the same today.

Regardless...I think I will go with 5"...for the day when I do get bigger turbos, etc.

The reason the 5 inch may lose HP down low (versus the 4) is because the 5 is soooo free flowing that theres not enough backpressure.

I really don't think a 5 is necessary unless your super moded.

Remember...4" is already better than the 3" the system could have been.

Unless you plan on making some big HP numbers just change the muffler, my 40" Nelson was dirt cheap, there's nothing wrong with the factory 4"....
.... of course if you just gotta have big shiny pipes cuz they look "so cool" go right ahead...

i have a 5" Magnaflow SS system from the turbo back. no kat. it's a little loud when the trk is being heavily excellerated but levels out to a very relaxing tone at cruising speeds. like a stock system.

but we(5.9L/6.9L) owners will never get that awesome V-8 sound like your PSD and mine had/has. no matter what exhuast is installed. that is 1 of the things i miss about my PSD

I have an 03 5.9 CTD using a 20" stainless magna flow (glass pack design )and using a K&N air filter (larger filtering surface area ) using the stock air cleaner housing. I get great mileage and it sounds great. At idle it's a little louder than stock. But I get 23 miles per gallon at 65 mph. With having the stock 30 gallon tank I can drive from Detroit to Louisville, Kenducky (Ford Kentucky truck plant) on a 1/2 a tank. And drive from Detroit to Fenton,Missouri (DCX truck plant) on 3/4 of a tank.

i believe magnaflow has some examples of exhuast sound clips on their website

imo...6 cyl. vs. 8 cyl.,... sounds like poo-poo
