Need Los Angeles (Santa Clarita Valley) diesel shop - Intermittent power steering
Power steering sometimes fails3rd Gen. 2003 2WD. Just replaced the power steering hoses and power steering pump 1 month ago. Local company did the work. On my way from work on the freeway 70 mph, 30 mile commute. When I slightly moved over to the off ramp everything was fine. Came up to stop sign, two right turn lanes, I am on the inside lane. I slowed for a "CA stop" and tried to turn right but the power steering failed and I just about hit the motor home in the lane next to me. It was really hard to steer right, but it was like manual steering. I continued down the road and the next right turn it did the same thing. The the steering came back, no issues. I took it to a local shop that replaced the power steering pump and hoses and they found nothing wrong and drove it on the freeway, same conditions and the problem never came up. This is really dangerous and if my wife was driving she would have been in an accident.
Could it be the hydroboost unit? Rack and pinion? maybe an intermittent power steering pump that was just replaced? I drove the vehicle probably 50-60 miles before the problem happened. No problems. The problem came up after I drove for about 30 miles at freeway speeds at 70mph.
This is dangerous and the shop cant find the problem. I need a recommendation for a good and fair local garage that knows what they are doing.
The current shop that I have the truck at ....... ehhhh.
Help!!!

Hey there. I have a 2003 DRW and had some of the same issues. Like you I bought an aftermarket stock pump....took about three weeks to die. Same issues...no ps at idle stopped. This is the situation where it's hardest on the pump it seems to me.
I spent about $1000 cdn on an uprade. The parts are all dodge parts...you have to get a new style pump 'zf' if I remember right, a new resevoir and a bracket. You can probably get a rebuild zf and save yourself a lot of coin. Found that out after I did mine of course.
Night and day difference. Drives like a car pretty much now. Love it.
Google dodge zf upgrade and you'll find lots of threads.
