Name that part

A buddy of mine just picked up a new '07 5.9 3500 4x4. I haven't seen it yet, just talked to him on the phone about it. He was asking me what the part over the top of the valve cover is. Since I haven't seen an '07 yet, I figured I'd ask you guys. The description he gave me was that it was the raised part of the valve cover (about half the length of the cover) and had hard lines running out of the drivers side going down. He used to have an '03 and he's got a buddy with an '04.5 and neither had this. So what is this part? Someone had told him it was part of his exhaust brake, but that didn't sound correct since I'd expect all of that equipment to be down behind the turbo.

So the last 5.9s for '07 did pick up some emissions stuff? I thought all of that was saved for the 6.7.

But that would make sense from what he described.

He may have the new 6.7 or he is talking about the plastic cover that is on the valve cover with the breather pipe coming out going down the drivers side of the block.

It's the kanooter valve that injects the red taillight sparking oil into the muffler bearings.

It sounds like he's describing the raised part of the valve cover where the Cummins logo is. There are 2 black hoses/tubes coming out of it on the drivers side. I am guessing, but I believe the small one to the front is an oil return line because it goes back down to the block just above the oil pan, and the large one towards the back is the breather tube.

The thing I noticed on my 07 5.9 was that there was a lot more room on the drivers side of the motor. I don't need a 12 inch extension and jointed connector to get to the fuel filter anymore.

Justin could he be referring to the APPS Cover? There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which trucks have it. Mine does. I have seen it on automatics and on manuals of all 3rd gen years. Or not. About half and half.

It is on the driver side kind of under and in front of the intake air horn.

Just a guess on my part based on what you described.

The APPS is the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor. It is/was used to take the cable input from the accelerator and turn it into the a measured voltage provided to the ECM to control fuel delivery.

This sounds like the piece I'm talking about. If I get a picture of it from him, I'll put it up here. But that's pretty close to what he described.

Thanks for the help guys!

Here is a picture of the 04.5 motor.

You can see 2 tubes coming out of the darker part of the valve cover towards the back on the drivers side. The 07 5.9 valve cover is one piece all the way back. If I remember right, on my 04.5 the raised portion of the valve cover could be removed from the lower section (2 pieces). I think because the valve cover is now 1 piece, they changed the way these 2 tubes exit the valve cover, making them more obvious.
