2006 Mileage questions
A few weeks ago I traded my 03 Duramax in for a 06 Ram 2500 /Cummins. I like the Dodge, but the mileage is really poor (a lot worse than the Duramax). I haven’t done much hi-way driving yet, but in town it is getting 10 – 12 (empty, no towing).
It has an Edge Juice w/Attitude module, but otherwise the truck is stock (as far as I know). I have the Edge set at “1” (mileage). The truck has about 60K on it.
I will change the fuel filter and air filter this weekend and see if that helps.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave

If you are in a mountainous region then I don't doubt those numbers. Plus your driving style will have a lot to do with it. I'm sure you are driving the same as you did with the DMAX though right?
Been driving it pretty easy.
I'm hoping a filter change will help a little, I don't know the history of the truck, so not sure when the filters were changed last.
still using winter blend fuel in colorado? that will kill your mileage too. your mileage seems a little low. i also have the edge juice, bigger tires, lock out hubs, etc and i am getting 14 in the city and 17 on the highway with winter blend fuel right now.

dont worry mine sucks too and will continue to, my overhead says roughly around 16 with a smarty and most times hand checked its 1-2 mpg high.
these trucks arn't for mileage like everyone willl chime in with, but with the technology we have in 2009 tell me how its possible these truck cant get low 20's all day long what a joke, programers can write programs to generate a ton of horsepower by plugging something in but now one can write one to save fuel or lower rpms at highway speeds \,
alright vent over

I don't do any pure city driving so I can't compare those numbers. That said, the only time I have been in the 10 -12 range has been towing my 8500 lb camper. Usually I am on state or county highways running 60 mph and I get 18 -19 doing that.
I would suggest you air up the tires to at least 65psi all the way around, check / replace air and fuel filters, get fuel from a reliable source, and take a trip where you can maintain around 60 - 65 mph for a good long distance. Then top off and calculate your mileage. If that trip doesn't net you at least 17 mpg there is a problem. Problems could include brakes dragging, transmission slipping, or fuel delivery.

My 04.5 with edge set on 1, driving 60 mph, tires 5 psi below max pressure, the best I have seen is 20. Going to try setting the edge on 3 as some have tried. Sure glad I never sold my good ol' bombed 95- 17 mpg pulling my 8000# 5th wheel through the rogers pass in bc!
Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm still trying to get used to this truck
I'm not what the gear ratio is, I will look for a tag this weekend.
I picked up a new air filter and fuel filter today, I'll put those in this weekend and see if that helps.

I live in Colorado Springs. Around town I get about 12-13. Highway cruising empty at 80mph I get 17-18. (checked by hand calc). From everything I'v read, that's just what these trucks get.
I don't recommend over inflating the tires for better fuel mileage. Any little bit you save in fuel will be lost by early tire wear.
