Naw, I don't think that is what he meant ...... I think he's like me. If he had an auto he'd be standing on it at every stoplight ..... the 6-speed keeps us from drag racing city buses, Powerjokes and the like!

Get the mannual,I am wishing I did.Just had my auto overhauled,it was in need of its second govenor pressure valve solenoid. Both were contaminated by debris which they said usually comes from the T.C. The clutches were also glazed because of the debris.I have never towed a thing.Needless to say ,I no longer have any confidence in the 48 re auto.Lucky it was all under warranty. And when I asked them about the heavy duty upgrade option they said there was no such thing, but then said after the warranty expires they would be glad to help me upgrade it??? I think I'll be doing that at a place that specializes in auto upgrades.Get the mannual for sure, you can upsize your tires and not feel you may be straining your tranny!

for towing the auto is better imo. The engine doesn't loose boost pressure in between shifts like the manual. Once the motor looses boost its a pig while it tries to rebuild the pressure.
Also the idea of buying something based on what it cost to replace is a pretty screwy logic.

driving an auto... wish I had a manual..

if you plan on bumping your HP any at all... plan on upgrading your T/C at the least... a built tranny cost $$$$... VS a HD clutch

well, if i would have completely understood what a terd the auto is and that it was going to cost me so much to try and correct i would have bought a manual. i guess if i never drove a hd truck i would say it will somewhat get you by but since i had a duramax/ally its pretty dissapointing after you hook something to it.

Love the manual for pulling, especially combined with the use of the Exhaust brake. More of a pain in stop and go, but really great for towing.

Well everytime I see a thread title like this one I know what to expect. "The auto trannies are junk." "Get the manual." "Dodge can't build a good auto."

My auto has been great. I ran it 85,000 miles without a hiccup. From 50,000 miles on it, on up, it has been at 467+HP up to over 500. I have towed up to 26,000 total weight with it, drag raced it and sled pulled...........all on the original stocker.

I finally saved the money and had it built (DTT) but I drove it to and from the shop for the build. Trans was fine although the original tq converter had some discoloration due to heat.

The main weak link on the stock auto's, imo, is the torque converter.

I know they cost some coin, but a BUILT auto really puts the autos ahead of a manual, imo. And the stock auto's, imo, are not bad. And any of them can break when abused....manual or auto.

..

Why do you think an Auto is better for hauling Livestock?

I haul horses and cattle with my 6 speed all the time with no problems. Most of the guys I know that pull stock trailers for a livin run 6 speeds.

very true!!!

even though like everyone else..... I too want a stick... my auto has been a trooper... have towed 30k+ lbs with no problems on the stock tranny.

been waiting for the stock TC to go out before upgrading to a triple TC. according to Goerens ... right as lockup occurs... let off.. then step on throttle after lockup... this will extend life of stock TC...

must be working... still on stock TC... trouble free..

still want a stick!!!

If your gonna make HP over 500, get the auto. Otherwise the stick is great, shifts like a dream.

My G56 held good at 570hp for awhile, my first hard pull at over 600hp grenaded 4th gear though. The G56 is a Mercedes transmission and parts are VERY EXPENSIVE. For what I do, I wish I had an auto.

I think everyones gona have their opinions, depending on what they use it for. I've had both. Sometimes I miss my auto(had a built goerend), but all in all, I'm glad I got a stick on my new one. The G56 shifts awesome, and would outpull my auto anyday. The only thing I miss the auto for, is racing, and nice highway rpms for fuel mileage. Goin 80 with my G56, I'm at 2300rpm, so that hurts mileage

sure thing... me too... but price difference is pretty large

built tranny vs HD clutch

some folks spend as much for the tranny as others do for the entire truck
