Loud Knock from flywheel area
BAD Knock from flywheel area
I am looking into a 2005 6speed truck for sale that has a wicked knock I cant identify 100%. It sounds as if every ignition event is amplified as if the engine has every rod knocking. The truck is rough and has most likely been severly neglected. However, I cant imagine with 67K miles it is about to kick the rods out. The sound really sounds as if it is coming from the flywheel area and I have heard there were problems with the two piece flywheel that can cause this. It starts knocking as soon as you hit the starter before the engine actually fires and continues a slit second after you kill it. The sound changes slightly when the clutch is depressed and you can feel the sound in the pedal(I do realize it is hydraulic, but you can feel it slightly). The tranny shifts perfect through the gears, and the clutch works perfectly from a standstill. I would not drive it with this noise!
The engine fires right off but it is hard to tell how well it is running due to the extreme knocking noise. I have never heard anything like this and actually had the engine start fine, go in gear, and take off.
Anyone have any ideas on the problem?

I think your guess at dual mass flywheel problem is likely correct.
Wouldn't really know for sure, I suppose, until you pull the transmission and look.
I was looking at a used 06 once, and I saw there was warranty work for a dead miss. They thought it was injectors, but that didn't help, and they found it had dropped a valve seat.
Another warranty work order said engine knocking from bottom end. They replaced the flywheel, whic solved it.
I think having one weak injector or cylinder can kill the duall mass flywheel...

I think 05 and up only have 3/36 and 7/100 on the engine, so I would guess if it is indeed the flywheel that wouldn't be covered?
I wonder if you tore out the transmission yourself, and it turned out to be some engine problem, if the dealer would give you grief on the warranty?

Just to add my two cents.. Had a loud banging noise , like two hammers slamming together. Took it to the shop and they called me the next day and found that 2 bolts on the flex plate were loose, and one was completely missing. Tore the torque converter up in the process. Kinda sad, thinking that some 18 year old kid on the assembly line, making 40,000 dollars a year, got bored and forgot to tighten mine down, and possibly just missed one completely.

should only have dual mass if a g56 05 was the year they had the nv56 and the g56. does sound like a dual mass problem but it should also have a real bad vibration

I think this truck can be had for around $2-3000. It is a repo and has some body damage as well that the bank is making an insurance claim on to make up their loss. I can fix all of that myself and repaint. The banker told me they had two of them and the last one which ran perfect only sold for $6k. This is a 3500 4x4 quad cab...... Parts alone would be worth what I can get the truck for, but that is not what I want it for. History on the truck is not available since they cant disclose the previous owner. I do business at the bank and they were already convinced they would get no money from the truck.....I helped them along with this after I looked at it and told them what I would give it that condition
.
Honestly, the truck is worth the money if the engine was toast, but my objective is to get it cheap and build a monster for a decent amount of money. I am getting the vin to the local dealer so they can check history and see if it sheds any light on the situation.
There is vibration in the truck. I went and listened to the exhuast while idling but it has 4" with no muffler and is just hard to determine if it is running smooth with the amount of noise. I have never heard anything like it from a vehicle that could move under its own power.
I wish I could have it a day and have the trans removed as well as the oil filter cut apart and then I would know, but there is just not anyway that will happen in this situation.
Keep the input coming I would love to hear if anyone has any other experience with a failure on the flywheel. The thing for me that made me really lean that way was the split second noise as soon as you hit the starter and after fuel cut off.

I wonder if some clown that owned it may have sabotaged it, knowing that it was about to be reposessed. Have heard about that before- guys dumping sand into the crankcase and fuel tank etc.

if you can get that cheap then no matter what its a good deal. you can get a cr motro complete for around 7k or less. g56 tranny has the reverse to the lower left. i wouldnt think dropped valve because when i dropped one the truck wouldnt even start
Reverse was not on the low left. Both up and down left side were forward gears as I did check that. I guess this means NV5600? I am not up on the late model changes....does this mean it is a dual mass?
Cant remember if I mentioned it, but when idling there did not appear to be any blowby.
