Question Launch Shudder?

My truck has a vibration in the drive train in 1st and 2nd gears!!! it is really noticible when towing, especially heavy loads 10,000+.....It never had this problem until approx 2 weeks ago.....does this sound like a u-joint issue???? Any help will be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

Yep, Sounds like a ujoint. With heavier loads you get lots of spring wrap which is torture on ujoints. If you haul heavy ya probably should have traction bars to prevent spring wrap. I don't have mine yet but they are on the to do list. ks

There is a tsb out for that problem, you can read about it here http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2004/03-003-04.htm

I've had the same problem when towing my trailer. I just start off real easy to help reduce the shudder. Is this common on the 05's and does the TSB cover my truck?

Question

Is this still a problem with the 06 3500 duallys? I notice a shudder when I take off from a stop.

If its shuddering you guys already need new U joints.
I made a new spacer that dropped my carrier down about .5".
www.rockauto.com has new precisions that are greasable for about $20 each.
Part number for the 6 speed is #351

Napa has them for about $30 each.

I would make a copy to show them, it's amazing how little some dealers know about this stuff, you sometimes have to lead them around by the nose, this may be one of them The only problem i see is you may have to hook up the trailer so you can duplicate the problem, if you just take the truck in unloaded they will say "nothing found". The driveline angle is changing enough when loaded heavy to create the shudder at launch, at least thats what i think and if not fixed soon it will be u joints next, i don't even tow and have had 2 joints replaced already, both on the rear driveshaft.
good luck.

When you replace the ujoints go with Spicer original greasable or non greasable. They are around $35 and will last. Check all ujoints before you install them. pull the cups out about 1/16 of an inch and try to rock them. If they rock then don't buy 'em. Good u-joints won't rock so they won't wear as quickly. Do a search on hear and you'll find the numbers. ks
