Kind of funny how the A/C drags these engines down....

I can tell the AC is on because it makes a boat load of noise, unfortunately very little cool air. All show and no go from this AC; kind of dissappointing as it gets a tad warm here in the Phoenix area

Mine seems to cycle alot and it does affect the idle a little bit too. It works fine so I'm not worried about it much. It just startles me sometimes when sitting at a stoplight and it almost feels like an engine miss...

Same here. One thump at first start and never even notice if it cycles or not. No engine drag at all. My last dodge (V8 gasser) would drop the RPM and feel it while driving, so I was impressed that this truck is not at all noticeable.

unnoticable on my 04 or my 06, totally unnoticable, even let other guys drive it before, one guy was like "turn off the AC for MPG" so he cycled it a bunch, no change at all.

the initial clunk of all that mass getting moving, then a light foggy mist from the AC vents as it condenses the humidity.

i run my AC on STUN - it's HUMID here (88% this morning at 05:55)

it's amazing how much variance there is on these trucks.

ice cold - where it takes your breath away, toes go numb.

here's the scenario: it's 101 out side, 101% humidity, you run the AC on stun to get yourself half froze over, then when you have to walk a mile from the truck to the building, you won't defrost

the wife keeps a blanket & coat in the truck.

it's hot & humid in SC, and the AC in my building is mediocre, have to get cool enough in the truck to last me for a while.

Mine works fine, no drag down and I run it summer and winter. Stops the windows from fogging up in the winter. I think it comes on anyway when the heater switch is in defrost mode.

It does it on defrost but it isn't as pronounced. I hardly noticed it all winter. Now that it is getting hot I notice it everytime I'm stopped.....

Im not a big fan of the A/C. I like to drive Ace Ventura style with the windows down.

I do notice when I run the A/C that it makes a thump sound when it engages but I don't realy notice any power drawn from anywhere. Not like when I do a cold start in the winter and my lights dim.

Now on the other hand, I have one heck of a heater. It nearly burns you out of the cab. My eyes get all dry the snot in my nose evaporates, it's a good mechanism.

It takes hp to turn any accessory, gasoline engines use idle compensators to correct for the load that the A/C puts on the engine....it used to just be an electric actuator on the throttle linkage, now most are done with programming.
Not sure if the diesel has/needs that... i'm sure it can take the load, you're just hearing it.

Seriously, though - I don't see a difference in either power or mileage on the '98 or the '05...
