Key Switch Code Reading

I read a couple days ago about a trick with the key switch to get codes. How do you do that
Thanks

I could not get this procedure to work on my 06 Mega. I think they changed something in that model year. I have been able to do the key on/off thing on previous vehicles.

I had the check engine light on the Mega come on a few weeks ago. Ended up just going to the dealer as it was warranty anyway. They would not tell me which code it was, just that there was a flash to fix the problem.

The service advisor told me the reason the check engine light was on was because the truck "knew" there was an update that needed to be done. Guess the truck is smarter than I thought! I just decided to drop the conversation at that point.

My new 07 still does the on off thing for codes. I did find that you must be quite a bit quicker than my 04.5 was to get it to display and is is much slower getting the results. Maybe the can bus system is slower?????

Make sure not to start the truck. Only tun it from the off to on position 3 times......no start.

When I hold the trip meter button in and turn the key forward the whole gauge panel runs through diagnostics. At the end of that procedure, it displays any codes the computer has stored. Are those the same codes that appear in the on / off / on / off / on procedure?

I'll have to try this again the next time the light comes on. I tried numerous times but it wouldn't do it.

I have a different vehicle that I just did it with and it worked fine (2002 model year).

No, not the same, those are the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic codes, that is a way to run the Instrument Cluster Diagnostics.

Do a search I am sure I have posted a list of those codes at some point.

In his defense he probably doesn't really know or probably care. I found it interesting he gave me that line though, it must work with most customers.
