I drove from Big Spring, Tx to Weatherford, Tx Friday with a living quarters trailer and the wind was blowing with me. I got the best mileage I have ever seen with that trailer and a horse(14.4 MPG), but my truck ran hotter than ever before. It useally stays below the 200 degree mark, on hills goes to the right side of the 200 mark(the black mark above the 200), this weekend it stayed on the right side of the black mark. Any idea what happend?

 

FWIW - I noticed that my truck was running a bit warmer than usual about a month ago. I went ahead and rinsed out the radiator, intercooler, and condensor from the inside out. There's another thread discussing this somewhere around here.

I didn't notice a whole bunch of gunk coming out in the water stream, but now it's back to running back where it used to. My truck has about 27K miles on it, and this was the first time I've done this since new.

 

May have to do that, after it goes to the dealership. They called me the day before I left because the last time I was in there they said I had a seal on the transmission seeping, so they ordered the part in December and just now letting me know they had it.

 

Do a search on here for 'wash radiator' and you'll come up with all kinds of suggestions, as well as pics of a couple of tools made by the members to help in this endeavor.

The higher the water temperature the better your mileage and power will be with a diesel. There is a company that replaces the coolant with a fluid polymer solution and a high temperature thermostat so that the new "coolant" is at 280 deg. or higher. 15% more mileage is the claim. ks

This works real well for cleaning out the dirt, grass, etc from the back side. $10 or so in parts from Home Depot, and your in business.

 

Ranger Hill is always a blast going down and a EDIT going up, only one time have I ever down shifted going up though(trucks infront of me too slow and bunched). Hit it at 75 and goes to 60 with the trailer I pull.
I went to the dealer this morning they think the over heating has to do with a thermostate sticking part way. They should have a new one by Tuesday, we'll see when I can get back up there.
