Intermittent low knocking sound
Intermittent low knocking sound
Before I take my truck back to the dealer to have them look at it I figured I would try to explain what my concern is and maybe someone might have an idea what it may be.
Truck only has 22k on it. At idle I get an intermittent low knocking sound. It will knock several times and stop for several seconds and then start again. It kind of sounds like a rod knock. I can’t hear it while I am in the cab, only when I am outside the truck. When I open the hood it sounds like it is coming from the right front area. I can hear it while I am driving like in a tunnel, with the window down, only on deceleration. Under load I don’t here the knock. No smoke and still plenty of power.
Another thing that I get but never paid too much attention too, is under load or coming up a hill if I floor it I get what I would describe pinging. Like a gas motor using low octane fuel. It’s not too bad mainly annoying. It will do the same from a stop for a few seconds if I munch it until the rpm’s get up.
This concerns me but maybe it’s normal for the 3rd gens. I know if I take it to the dealer without an idea what it may be they will just say it’s normal. The only reason I am going to the dealer is it is under warranty.
Thanks

Mine has an intermittent knock at very light throttle too, it is very unnerving. The pinging is "normal" for these things. Not sure on the knock, but I am at 87K miles and it has been doing it as long as I can remember.
Took the truck to the dealer. Mechanic listened to it and said that he has had a few like mine that made the same noise. He said he was able to correct it by re-setting the timing on the injection pump.
Picked it up later on and the intermittent loud rattling noise is gone.
