Injector cleaner

What type or brand of injector cleaner should I run in my 05? How often should I use it?

Have tried them all over the years. Found the best injector cleaner is heavy right foot, 6% grades and a full load in the bed or a trailer. Nothing like running the egt's at 1250F to clean carbon and varnish from the injector tips. After doing so the engine is quiet, smooth, till grocery getting carbons them tips up again. Nature of the cummins

I try to stay away from straight inj cleaner and use only those that are cleaner and lubricant. A lot to the cleaner only's are alcohol based and are hard on the cp3 and inj's.

Best thing for your injectors in my opinion would be to get a 2mic fuel filter setup. After having my #1 and #6 injectora fail, i asked a local cummins/bosch shop why and they said bosch demands like 3-5mic for our injectors and that thay are very susecptible to any small contaminents in the fuel due to the fine spray pattern, and dodge put a 10mic in at the factory. With a good 2mic filter setup, your injectors should stay clean!

Otherwise you could add a littel Powerservice and go tow something heavy, should clean everything out. I personally think a 5%-10% biodiesel cleans everything out and increases lubricity better than any additives.

bradler,

FYI, Cummins went to a 7 Micron fuel filter in June of 2006 even though many part's houses will still sell you a 10 micron filter because most don't know that Cummins made a change to the smaller 7 micron filter. Some of us use the Baldwin PF7977 fuel filter as its nominal at 2 microns and absolute at 5 microns and it fits in the stock filter housing.

My 06 runs on bunker diesel and i do a BG flush and clean twice a year at $67.00 CAN. truck runs good 52.000km 16.5 to 19.0 MPG per tank but it also depends on what im doin. The dealer said i have to drive it harder. on the computer it said i drive like a old man. No fuel problems what so ever and i scan my truck once a week at work with an OTC scanner.

Best injector cleaner on these 3rd gens is a do a fair amount of towing and get the EGT's up to 1000 to 1200 for a few minutes. It's free and costs nothing to do. These trucks like to work hard. So, work it.

Run 100% Homemade BioDiesel and you don't have those problems.

I have been running it harder. A few jack rabbit starts and winding it out a bit and it seems to be running better with no rough idle on start up now. The first few times I dogged it I noticed a puff of black smoke as the turbo spooled up, now I don't see any black smoke. Guess you guys are right, this engine likes to work hard and I have been driving like a little old lady. The mpg of 22 non towing has me thrilled so much that I had changed my driving habits. Now from time to time I drive it like a rental. I'll hook the 5th wheel up in a few days and head to the West Virginia mountains. That will work up a sweat.
