I'm surprised....

how clean my engine looks inside. It has 150K miles on it. A gas engine would be all caked up with sludge. This pic is how it looked when I removed the valve cover. I haven't even wiped the gasket surface yet.

Gas or deisel? I suspect it's not good.

I wish I could tell you. I just bought this truck 2000 miles ago. It had 149K when I bought it.

I haven't even had my valve cover off yet. Anybody that has, is this standard that this valve-train is so clean?

Yes it's normal... you can still see the black oil on the rockers and bolt heads. Looks like what a good oil will do... keep soot in suspension.

Thanks. Just making a mental note for later on down the road when I finally get in there.

Can also add Texaco Havoline to that list.

I have a Chevy Suburban with a 12 valve Cummins in it since 1989. It has 300K + miles on it and it is just as clean under the valve cover as the picture above. I think it is a function of the greater quantity of detergents in diesel rated oil. Back in the 60s we used to clean the sludge out of our hot rods by filling them with Delo and then changing the filters a couple times. It worked!

Take the oil cap off and use a flashlight... you can get a good peek at your valvetrain that way. I'd say yours will look very similar to the picture above.
