We see long idle times for pickups all the time at our shop. I for one turn my truck off, I see no benefit to let it idle for more than 5 minutes. A pulpwood rig that's keeping his air charged up because it leaks everywhere, that's a different story. Funny how the guys that leave there pickups run for 20 minutes at a clip while in our shop wasting time are more often the ones that on our 60 day past due list. They are the ones that shouldn't be wasting anything.
A macho thing..... no doubt about it!

To me, the concern is EGT with extended idling. Cummins recommends against idling because EGT can get below 300 and cause the stuff that Dr.D mentioned.

But I live at high altitude, and in the summer heat of 100 and more. I can idle for a LONG time and never see EGT drop below 300.

We have the competing interests of cooling the turbo and allowing the engine to come down to temp vs. the need to keep cylinder temps up to keep it burning clean.

And yes, towing a trailer for 15hrs a day is the "good life" for a CTD.

Well I guess I posted a pretty interesting topic.... It has been interesting to follow it left and right. As hot as it has been here I have left it run a little more that I usually do.....
Personally if the conditions warrant and you want to/need to let it run, then it sure as heck shouldn't hurt the thing. Other wise shut it off and save fuel......

One thing I don't understand is the high Idle thing. Is that a flash you dealer does or a code he enables? How do you activate it if you want to use it? Does it automatically disengage when you shift or brake?

There are a lot of sharp guys on here and I enjoy reading and learning from all your posts....

The high idle is enabled by the dealer. To turn it on after it is enabled, with your foot off of the brake, turn the cruise control on and hit SET, this will ramp it up to 1100, to increase it in increments of 100, push RESUME. If you touch the brake it will turn off.

There is also a "do it yourself" high idle.

Cut a stick to fit between the "go peddle" and the seat. Adjust the seat forwards a little bit and bingo!!, a high idle where ever you want to set it.

Those with the adjustable peddles can use that feature to adjust the RPM's with the stick.

I just wish the high-idle feature worked with the 6spd!

i got my electronic high idle through dieselservices.com, push button to speed up, tap brake to normal slow idle,

the exhaust brake also works great to keep up idle combustion temps, 500+ pre turbo at 750 rpm, i have had mine idle for an hour, with brake on, at -30 F, without the engine wanting to do the automatic speed up to 1000rpm, cab stays boiling hot, just not sure what it does for the turbo oil seals
