idle question

I just bought my first diesel, 2003 CTD with 7,000 miles. When I start the truck in the morning when its cold outside, I notice after it idles for about 2-3 minutes at 7-800 rpms it jumps up to 1,000 rpms and idles high until I get in and drive it. Is 1,000 rpms high idle? Is this a normal trait of the Cummins diesel?

Thank you for the reply...

I just bought the truck with 7,000 miles on it....NO owner's manual! That is why I signed up for this forum last night.

Motor is operating normally. Should immeadiately go to normal idle when you put it in gear.

It would be REALLY nice if someone, like Genos's, came out with a kit that we could install a switch to achieve high idle any time we wanted.

mymaur, high idlers are available for automatic equipped trucks. I'm still waiting for the phone call when they're available for stick shift trucks.
