So this morning sitting in a coffee drive through, I herd a small amout of the sound while sitting still. Guess that rules out the carrier bearing being bad so maybe it is a tranny problem.

I have the owl sound since the truck was new. I have a 4.5 standard cab with a one piece drive shaft so that eliminates the carrier bearing as a cause. Alot of people have reported hearing the noise so I just ignored it at the time. I don't even notice it anymore unless I'm really listening for it.

Same for me. Every year when the weather starts getting cooler, the "hoot owl" threads start again.

My truck makes the same noises when my wife is riding with me. I agree it sounds like an owl. Maybe it's just her "hooters".
