I didn't think to ask...?
My 03 HO had the lift pump fail at 64k. Repairs were picked up under warranty and they were closing when I arrived to p/u. Service Manager told me they no longer replace the lift pump w/ the one that mounts on the engine due to heat problems causing premature failure , they now relocate the lift pump to inside the fuel tank.I didn't think to ask....is this a Cummins specific part or is it possible they used a gasser pump?I have a ded and there was no charge so I guess it was paid under the valve train warranty, right?

That is the updated repair. They retro fitted an intank pump for the reasons you stated, it is designed for diesel and much more reliable than the engine mounted pump.
