Howling sound...help!

It got really cold this morning (low teens) and when I was accelerating I could here a howling sound from somewhere but the noise disappeared after I got to certain speed. When I was coming to a red light (slowing down) I can hear that howling sound again. Is this the rear end whine that a lot of people are talking about? Is it because of the cold temperature? I've never heard such a noise when it was not that cold. I had the dealer topped off my rear end I few months back so I don't think it's the fliud level. Any ideas would be greatly aprreciated.

When mine done the same thing, it was the heater hose pressure control valve on the engine. I was still in warrenty at the time and it was covered.

I have the same noise, it sure does not sound like it is coming from under the hood, sounds like it is coming from the back of the truck. Heater hose preasure valve sounds like the last place I would look?????

Does it sound like a ghostly kind of whiney sort of howl, and go up and down in pitch some? And do you notice it when you're coasting to a stop in particular? That's what mine has been doing and before I bring it to the dealer I'd like to find out what it might be, since they won't even HEAR it for starters. :

Re:Howling sound...help!

I have the same noise in my 2004 , it only has 1200 miles on it. Started making the noise around the 800 mile mark. Sounds like the same problem as it only does it in the mornings, the first time you drive the truck, after it been sitting all night. Once you drive for 2 or 3 miles the sound goes alway. I'm also thinking of taking it to the dealer to be looked at. When I take it in I will post what they have to say on the noise.

Yep, that is the sound I have. have no earthly clue what it is. Well do it with the clutch in or out, but always when slowing down. Seems to be getting louder as the truck breaks in.

Hello,

ok, I take my truck in a few weeks ago about the noise, they checked the rear end fluid level and it was a little low so they topped it off, and i left the dealership. The next morning I heared the noise again, the same no better or worse. So i took it back in and left it overnight so they could drive it when it was cold. They heared the noise and ordered a new yoke. Took in on Jan 2 and they installed the new yoke. Drive the truck home. The next morning I took the truck for a drive and ( you guess it ) the noise was back , but this time it doesn't go away as soon. It has been very cold the last few day with highs not going past freezing. So it might have something to do with the noise lasting longer. But it isn't right. Any ideas?

Thanks

My 04 does it also. It's the thick rear end lube in cold temps. Nothing really to worry about or get worked up about. Just about all ASD's that I've ever had have done it in really cold temps.

Thick rear end lube in cold temps? I don't buy it. I grew up driving in cold temps and have NEVER had a howling rear end other than an old van that a ham fisted monkey did his magic on.

Howling rear ends are not normal.

Mine does it too, and mine is not rear end lube by any means. It's definitely coming from the engine compartment. It only does it when cold. My 99 did the same thing until I had the TSB done on the heater hose. Since my new one does it rarely, I'm not going to worry about it. I've been dealing with the noise for years.

Just a thought, for those that have the noise at the front of the truck...could it be the cooling fan drive? Most vehicles I've had with fan clutches (rather than electric fans) have made noise when cold for the first few minutes of driving. It's always been a loud howl.
