Almost 110k miles and no problems, and no servicing since I bought it. I suppose it's time to do some "routine" maintenance on it. Love my truck...

Servicing is going to play a major part in the life of a transmission. If you do change at every 30k even less if you are working them harder you can expect a longer life than if you don't service them. Also increasing the power will cut down on the life span. In a lot of cases simply upgrading the torque converter and valvebody will allow you to run some extra power and take care of that transmission for you.

48re

My 04 calif. version lost the TC at 44,000, which took out most of the transmission. I do run the EZ at #3 but i"m real easy with the go pedal. I also tow 12,000 6-8 times a year.THe tranny may be tough but these TC are way too sloppy!

my tranmission went out at 24k with no programer or other mod for the engine. Got the transmission rebuilt all stock. I then bought the jr and have had no issues with the tranmission so far. I think it really all depends on driving habits and remember its a mechanical item! it will break down sometime, do your maint. and take care of it and it should hold out longer.

ive always wanted a diesel. my dad retired from gm so I get a discount but ive always heard cummins was the best motor and dodges transmissons where bad ive always heard that ( not trying to start anything its just what ive heard) I figure if there transmissons are THAT bad they would fix it because its only costing them money in the long run under warrenty work . Ive heard you cant beat a allison but the duramax moter realllllllllllllllly sucks ive heard. so i bought the dodge. love the truck and hope and pray i dont have trouble. my mom has a jeep and has had the trans replaced a few times and the guy that replaced it acted like it wasnt a big deal its normal. Like it was stated it is habbits and maintance but also a few could go wrong and also I dont know if anyone thought about it but have you EVER seen how dealers drive??? no telling how it was treated before you picked it up lol I hate taking to get my oil changed because the maintance people are just as bad.

You know I have friends that own chev's and Fords and they have had transmissions go out on them with stock power. For the most part I think that the big three make good transmissions but they are mechanical and will break down from time to time. My friend at work got a suncoast transmission, went out on him at under 1k crap happens. I dont think your going to get exact science by asking here on a forum how long the 48RE has lasted for people. There are to many variables to take into account but it does make a good discussion though. I would guess the biggest thing that contributes to tranmissions going out would be to much heat. I would like to get a trans. cooler and a temp gauge for it. I tow alot and I think that would help a lot.

I have an 03 with an 48RE with around 150,000 on and the torque converter just went out. I did have to replace the transducer and pressure solenoid at 140,000. I bought the truck used with 111,000 and don't know how it was driven before.

Bought the truck in 06 with 91,000 heavy towing miles. Put the rest on commuting at least 100 miles per day(mostly interstate at 1800 RPM). Truck was stock when I bought it. Was told tranny was shot when I rebuilt it. Was beginning to slip. Fluid and filter every 20,000 miles.

130,000 on mine dtt update kit, tcs 89h convertor, homebrew valve body.
48re planetaries are much stronger then the 47, the leakage areas and the convertor are the same.
Pull 8 t0 14 thousand 50% 0f the time, tst on 4x4 since 26,000 fulltime.
Address the leakage areas, put a tighter torque convertor in and they are **** near bulletproof barring total ignorance or over 450 hp.
