How hot?

How hot should a manual trans get?

Mine was hot enough the other day I could hold my hand on it for long but it didnt burn me. I know this is not too hot but how hot is?

Elk_Hunter 10-11-2006 06:45 PM

Good question. What type of maintenance do the 6 speeds need?

wap 10-11-2006 06:57 PM

The manual will tell you but I think its every 60k. I just did mine at thirty and cold tell you all about it but do a search for "G56 and tcase oil" or somethin like that I just posted it this weekend.

I used RP synchromax, dont know if I was supposed to or not cause apparently no one one here knew but I guess I will be the test dummy.

Steve034x4 10-11-2006 10:18 PM

The book says ATF+4 for the G56 and same for the transfer case. I change mine every 40k or so km's (about once/year).

wap 10-12-2006 06:34 AM

I know it says ATF+4 but Royal Purple makes synchromax specificaly for manual transmisions and transfer cases that call for atf, so I figured I would give it a try.

Anybody????

MikeyB 10-13-2006 06:36 AM

The best way to determine the temperatures is to either install a probe with gauge or use a IR temp meter. My guess is anything above 220 degrees should be a concern.

Anything about 220 for a manual?

I highly doubt my trans was that hot. I cold touch it but not more than a few seconds, and my hands aint the hardest I have ever felt.

Oh and by the way, thanks Mikey B

I have wondered the same thing when towing heavy. I just got my fastcoolers last week but only have about 25k on the redline MTL I put in. Maybe another 5-10k and I'll throw on the fastcoolers and may install a probe just to see.

One more time, does anybody have any more info?

I've got Fast Coolers on my truck, and a Commander on it's way. So, in about a weeks I can tell you how hot an NV4500 will get. Manual transmissions are pretty well known for staying fairly cool, which is why most folks don't monitor trans temp on a manual. I would say, IMO, anything over 200 degrees is getting pretty hot in a manual.

Please keep us posted.

Equalizer 2 10-15-2006 06:01 PM

I have been running RP Syncromax for about 35,000 miles and have only checked the level. Of course I am running this in a NV5600 and I haven't done anything about checking the temp. As stated there doesn't seem to be much worry (interest) in temps on a manual tranny. As for using the RP in a G56 I am not sure that the oil is properly formulated, I only checked with the makers of the oil for its compatibility for the NV5600.

wap 10-15-2006 06:31 PM

I havent talked to RP personally but it is advertised as, Formulated for manual transmissions and transfercases that call for ATF, and in the manual it calls for ATF+4, so I guess the only thing that kinda bothers me is the +4 part.
BTW I thought NV5600s needed a heavier oil than that, but if thats what they said and you got 35k I reckon its workin.

synthetic oils in gear cases

will synthetic oils dissipate heat better than conventional oils in transmission(6spd) and transfer cases

MikeyB 10-15-2006 09:08 PM

I don't think synthetic oils dissipate heat better but they can tolerate higher temps for longer periods of time than conventional dino oil. What synthetics will do is reduce friction so that will help lower the temps.

I have been a Marine Engineer for 38 years and I can hold my hand on a bearing that is 140o max. You should be fine if you can hold your hand on it, some heat is good keeps the water out.
I would say you are 130-140 which is ok

wap 10-16-2006 09:34 AM

clifford, you CAN hold 140 degrees?

Also if you have been a marine engineer for 38 years I would say your hands could stand more heat than mine, I have only go 22 years of wear on mine so they aint as hard as I wold like.

thank you for your info, and just to make sure, I could hold the trans for maybe 3 seconds and that was all I could take.

flipper-26 10-16-2006 11:13 AM

125-150 degrees farenheit (I am a diesel engine mechanic at Detroit Diesel as a second job.) is what the temperatures should run at even at extreme conditions.

wap 10-16-2006 05:18 PM

I guess I will get a temp gun and see after a hard pull what the temp is on the outside.
