HELP - ENGINE KNOCK (need some input)

This is the best discription I can give. On a cold morning not pluged in - truck starts like its missing for about 5 -10 seconds blows a little white smoke. After that engine runs perfect guiet no knock - sounds like its supost to. Once engine has idled for a bout 3 min. and warmed up knock begins - sounds like a second gen. The sound seems like its comming from the front of the engine and from the very back cyl. 1 & 6. If i run the fast idle up to 1100 r.p.m. knock seems to be almost gone.
If truck is pluged in over night it starts with a few quick stumbles and a little white smoke engine knock is there right away. Not any worse or any better.

- stumbling or missing and white smoke at start is recent started about a month ago.
- The knock has been there since I bought the truck new.
- had TSB done in october so that I could control the high idle did not have a starting problem just wanted the idle control.
- truck runs great same great power as always. No loss in fuel mileage maybe up a little between 13-15 hand calculated city/highway combined.
- do alot of short trips in town during the week.
- have run some heavy doses of power service in the last 1500 miles things havent changed.
- engine runs smooth up through the rpm range have a little rattle between 1300 & 1900 r.p.m. which I fell is normal
- if i run the truck really hard and then have to stop at a light right away truck seems to idle rough not much but noticeable this is recent also.
- the knock seems to occur once every half second at idle.

I'm thinking injectors.

Does any one have any thoughts
Thanks,
Tim

I am thinking it is normal. What do you consider a cold morning. I am thinking the grid heaters aren't coming on as long as when cold and you are a little carboned up. Get an excuse to take a long trip and see if it still does it. My 2003 changes sound with the weather. Are you current on maintence?

A cold morning for me right now is 36-38. didn't have this problem in January and February when temps were around 24-32 in the mornings. All maintence is current. Knock has been there ever since new I'm sure. I'm thinking the Knock is an injector and these are the symtoms I'm getting as it gets worse or maybe the knock and starting problems are two different things....

Thanks,
TIM

It sounds like injector issues to me too. I would suggest putting a doubleshot of Lucas in there. I know you used Power Service but try the Lucas. I have found it at O'Rielly's and at Atwoods. Any additive is more for lubrication rather than cleaning but Lucas might help.

Mine did the EXACT same thing, and still does every now and then. The first time I took it to the dealer and they cleaned all of the injectors and it went away. Now Ive been using Amsoil diesel injector cleaner, im sure Lucas is the same thing. Use some cleaner and run it really hard(pull something heavy for a few hours) You need to get the EGT's high enough to burn all of the carbon off. These diesels seem not to like to be idled at all, every time I let it idle for a while i get a knock the next morning.

The other day I bought 5 gallons of 100% biodiesel. Pumped 2.5 directly into an almost full tank. Drove some and noticed that the engine was way more quiet. Ran a couple of tank fulls and then added the other 2.5 gallons just because I had it. Engine still quiet.

I was warned that if adding bio to an old tank, it could pick up contaminents from the tank and other parts of the fuel system. Watch your filter! My tank is not quite a year old so I didn't worry about it.

I have used other fuel additive before, but nothing worked like the bio.

Tim,

It is the uppper cylinder lubricant. The bottle is clear and is gear lube shaped.

My truck started to do the same thing at 12k miles. Before that it would start at 18 degrees without missing. After the problem appeared, it would miss even after starting it when it was in the 70's. It would also miss at idle after it was completely warmed up. There was also alot of white smoke - not condensation - when starting it for the first time in the morning. The dealer replaced injector #6 and all was well. As a side note I was running Stanadyne PF since it was new. I also tried some clean up doses and the stuff from Redline. When the problem started I was pulling a 10k trailer from California to Texas. I put another 2k on it during the return trip with a trailer weight of 4k. none of this helped to resolve the issue.

Didn't I read that using bio in the Cummins will void the warranty or am I mistaken. Have an '05 Liberty CRD that I can use bio in without voiding.
Clarification is appreciated.

i thought they said it was recomended that you use no more than 20% bio.

With the price of regular diesel so dang high, i might as well start running bio

With all the talk relating to the infamous knock - ping - tick - clatter and everything these things do ......... Has anyone ever actually chunked a piston through the block or turned a crankshaft into a pretzel due to these annoying noises being early warning sign for something ?
