hard starting?

My fiances '06 is having a hard time starting in the mornings when it cold out. When it cranks it acts like it has no fuel in the system, like its missing, then like the batteries are low on it,(a realy slow crank), and when it starts its a strong fire up. But when the temperature is warm out it cranks just like any other stock truck. I've tried bumping the starter to let the fuel pump prime the system up but it doesnt change a thing. Any answers would be helpful.
Thanks, John

Have your battery's tested. When cold extra load is placed on battery's by preheaters. There is also a flash for Long Crank When Starting And/Or Transmission Shift And Battery Charging Enhancements. TSB 18-003-06 REV. A

You will not need to plug in. My truck started fine into the 20s, and I got a crank out of it, which sounded like your issue, when it was -10 to about 0. They tell you around the 20 mark is the plug in temp. Sounds like weak batteries, I'd get them load checked.

I'm having the same problem, mine usally starts on the 3rd crank... But sometimes is skips and does another 3... I took it to the dealer last year about this time and they said I was crazy.... Plus mine is like coughing for the first few minutes... Doesn't seem like the grid heater is gettin hott enough...

I was beginning to have starting issues a few weeks ago. Some times had to crank 3 or 4 times. Some times I did not think it was going to start at all. Started doing all kinds of diagnostics, injectors, FASS, grid heater, etc. Noticed some corrosion on passenger side neg post. Took it off to clean and noticed a small crack close to the post. Now I never really noticed that the cranking was slower than normal and no codes.

But at almost 5 years old and a crack in one battery I went ahead and replaced with two new red tops. Can't believe the difference in how it starts now.

I guess the one battery was getting bad and the other was doing all the cranking. Soon as the temp got below 50 it was just not enough amp to satisfy all the electronics needed to start normally. So might want to test the batteries as suggested above.
