Asking for a friend that just bought this truck. He says that the engine starts fine sometimes but at other times it cranks a long time before it fires. Warm or cold engine makes no difference.

The truck does have an Edge w/ Attitude, it was on the truck when he bought it last week.

Any ideas as to what to look for?

I'm not much help since my knowhow is with the 2nd gen trucks like mine.

Take the box's off & try again , then check for codes , can he ask who he got the truck from , what was going on before he sold it ?
Not being a 12v , I would suspect the fuel system , easy guess , with those fuel systems being a weak point , let lone a more complicated [ electronics's ]
Do a fuel pressure test , have him get a full set of gauges .

 

I would also check the oil level to see if it's going up....
a possible cracked injector.

 

I have the same deal, I believe there is a TSB on this, but I havent made it in yet.
