G56 tranny
G56 tranny
I have 97,000 miles on my 2006 manual 4x4.
Lately I noticed a noise when letting the clutch out in neutral.
Took it to a shop and they claim it is the input shaft bearing going bad - I thought this was a tough tranny - has anyone else had theirs go bad?

Just a thought but does yours have the dual mass flywheel? They are known to make noises like that.
One other thing that some folks recommend is that the G56 should run 1 extra quart of lubricant to keep certain bearings better lubricated. ALthough it's probably to late for that.
Report back and let us know what you find out.

Are you on the stock clutch? Sounds like it's time for a new clutch. When the bearing goes bad, it causes a lot of vibration, it can actually damage the tranny, so I would suggest you start looking in that direction real fast. Repairs to the tranny are a lot more expensive than a clutch replacement.
I am at 64K, still on the stock clutch, so far no noises or shifting problems. I plan to go to an aftermarket clutch, replace the flywheel at the same time, and also heavy duty hydros. I am running Gorilla Juice in my tranny, made a tremendous difference, and I did not overfill the tranny, not necessary with the right kind of fluid.

Yep it was the fly wheel - one shop tried to tell me the tranny needed a complete overhaul - just from listening to the noise the clutch made - took it to another shop and it was just the fly wheel.
you got the most miles out of the dual mass flywheel of anyone i have heard of. get a southbend conofe kit. the dmf usually does damage to the front seal and input bearing, when you pull the g56 if the front seal is seaping replace them both. there is a red rubber boot seal on the shifter that is prone to crack. inspect it. you must run one quart over full to lube and cool the front bearing just add the 7th quart in the top of the shifter. go back with gorilla juce

My clutch itself is not happy with the Smarty Jr on level 3 so I dropped it back to level 1 for now. I will be getting a new clutch next year so knocking on wood
that the flywheel holds out until then!!

Here >>>> Gorilla Juice
Regarding GJ,a couple of guys have reported real high operating temps with it.
Per Standard Transmission's recommendations I'm running Pennsoil Synchromesh.
To be honest, the best my tranny ever shifted was w/Amsoil Universal ATF.

OK new clutch but the noise came back (comes and goes) - in neutral with the clutch out - repair shop told me to put in a better oil - and see how that works - what is the perferred manual tranny oil for the G56?
flashman what clutch did you put in. on the oil we blend a oil that i like a lot better than the gorilla juice i recommended. i did that because some people get squeamish when you say blend. Chrysler shows atf4+ the manufacture shows delvac synthetic syncromesh sae50, we have found gorilla juice and the sae 50 a little to heavy for winter use, hard shifting first thing of morning. we use dello products rather than delvac so i am not going to recommend a brand, just type. blend one gallon of 5w30 synthetic syncromesh transmission with one gallon synthetic syncromesh sae50. the g56 holds 6 quarts to full pour one quart in the top of the shifter leaving one quart left. you must add the 7th quart to lube and cool the front bearing. the reason we are asking about the clutch is because the dmf is a disaster and can ruin the g56. the southbend conofe kit has a one piece solid flywheel with a real pilot bearing and all new hydraulics and will hold up to about 475 hp the dmf has a mickey mouse bushing for the pilot the junk between the dual masses throws extra wear on the bushing causing strain on the input shaft of the g56 enlarging the aluminum g56 housing. if you put a dmf back in you just wasted your money. get the sb kit and throw the new one in the trash

Will try your mixing trick - but may be too late for the input bearing.
