2005 Dodge Ram 3500 CTD. Has 1585 miles on it as of today. I have started to notice a fairly loud clicking sound when riding along 70-80 mph. It kinda sounds like a toy machine gun and it does it when you mash the accelerator pedal. It usually only does it the first couple of seconds when I mash the pedal and then it stops. It will also resume, not quite as bad, once I let off the pedal. It hasn't always made this noise. Maybe just the sound of a diesel, I really don't have anything to compare it too other than my dad's f-250 and he has recently sold it. It's really hard to explain the noise but it just don't sound right to me. I have looked through a lot of the past threads and I can't find anything that addresses my exact problem. Anybody else ever have this noise?

 

i get a little bit of a random clicking noise at idle. It doesnt do it all the time, but it does do it when the air is turned off. Mine has done it since new, no problems so far. Does your truck make the noise when it is idling?

doesn't really do it while idleing, if it does it's not near as loud as it is when it's up to speed. it's most noticeable during the first couple of seconds of acceleration, sounds like a toy machine gun???

 

It's like clockwork, My truck started to do the same thing at around 3000 mile mark, It was a very quiet motor until then. I took it to my dealer but they just said that this was normal. I also notice it more when I tow my travel trailer.

 

My motor has gotten much louder, at idle and under load, since new. Several people acknowledge this but nobody has provided a reason as to why.

 

1tuff3500, I'm pretty sure I know the noise you are referring to, and it is perfectly normal. I wouldn't worry about it. I hadn't noticed it too much until I put a box on my truck, which brought it out. I consulted many on this board, and ALL of them said it was normal.
