Some here need to remember and mention if their truck is manual or automatic trany.
Every HO owner I've talked to said the mileage was way down vs their earler engines.

Did someone edit larryt's numbers ? When he first posted them some of the trip MPGs were in the 22 to 25 range. I even commented on them in a post. Now I go back and look at these numbers and none are in the 22 to 25 range. What gives ?

Superduty,

Sorry, I've been away from this thread awhile and didn't notice your entry. No, there has been
no editing, You need to look at the next to last entry in each row, that is actual, the last entry
is the overhead computer.

Presently, I have 10,000 on the clock and there has been no change in the mileage for similar
type driving except for the normal fluctuations from tank to tank. For instance, my overall ave.
total miles/total gallons now = 19.31

At 7137 miles it was 19.23

In a more real world example I recently made a trip from Longview,Tx to Crane,MO which turned
out to be 838 mi. round trip. These are good but not exactly ideal roads except for certain
streches and my overall trip average was 20.8 mpg.

So I am overjoyed with mine and I feel from my limited experience the 600/610 sometimes gets
a bad rap.

4:10 Rear end Dually. See below

Towing 7 tons 10-12 mpg highway depending on the mountains and flats at 62 MPH.

Non-towing
62 mph highway 20-21 mpg
70 mph highway 19-20 mpg
55 mph highway 21-22 mpg

City speed limits no freways 18.5 mpg

When I fill my 80 gal in-bed fuel tank, I loos ~ 1mpg

I am not complaining.

cheers f

I am pleased with my mileage. At 12000 on my odometer I am now getting 18 to 20+ depending on conditions and keeping rpm's under 2k. I have another issue, however--particurlarly since long before fuel price hikes, fuel economy has been a priority for me. How much power is enough? My Cummins td is the most powerful vehicle I have ever driven and more than I need. More power comes with a fuel economy sacrifice. Perhaps Dodge could offer two diesel engine options on future trucks--one for extreme power, another for good power and better economy.

Good idea! And all it would require would be a different chip

MPG was one of my biggest concerns when I was looking at new trucks and the truthful dealers told me that no, it wont get 20mpg, but it will be in the upper teens. I had one BS'er tell me after it was brokein that it should pull 20+ yeah what ever. I have 8K on mine now and what is funny to me is I get not much less towing? 75mph=2100rpm and 15-16 mpg. Towing a older 26ft camp trailer 60-70mph I twice pulled 14-15. I kinda figured it would be more drastic? I would like to get 18-19 but with the things that have been done to my truck maybe I'm asking to much. Everybody around here pulls the cat off and runs straight pipe and claim that makes a world of difference, some do sound mean (in a good way) maybe we'll have to see.

My first post.......

I have 2000 miles on my 05, and I am struggling to get 14 mpg with 60/40 highway/city. Granted I have 4.10's, but I was hoping for 16-18. This is my first CTD so I'm on a sharp learning curve.

Well here is the first lesson on your 05. Get more miles on it, if you got something to tow do so and get your miles up to around 15000-20000, then I think you will be right in your ball park of 16-18 MPG. BREAK IN IS KEY.

Also whenever you hear that Turbo spooling up your usingmore fuel. Be a little easy on the throttle and you will be rewarded. When you need the power then go crazy.

Try and keep below 2000 RPMs when not towing and just using as daily driver.

Idle time- avoid it at all cost, this puppy sucks down as much fuel sitting still as it does doing 70 down I-75. If you keep track of your mileage you will see idle time really kills you bottom line MPG.

Avoid the nay sayers, I use to be one of them. I bought this $40,000 rig about 40 miles away from home. I was about to cry on the trip home when i seen the overhead reading 12 MPG.

People kept telling me it would improve but I was skeptical. Now I went from a 13-15 MPG city to pretty much around 17 MPG and getting about 20 MPG highway now where as before I would get around 16.5-17.5 MPG.

I have kept track of my mileage since day 1 and have studied ways to get the fuel Mileage better.

I have never used an additive even though I think I should give it a try to see what it does.

The things I mentioned above are the things that have worked for me and im sure the others on this forum.

I have an 05 ton dually (havent updated my sig yet) with only 5,000 miles and I usually see around 14 mph no matter how I drive (unloaded) Will my milage get better as I get some miles on the truck? Anyone know from experience?

Good info Venom, and thank you. There's no way that I can keep my RPM's under 2000 on the highway with 4.10's. I think it's at 2200 at 70 mph. I've second guessed my decision of ordering the truck with 4.10's, but I knew I would slap 35's or even 37's on it real soon and would be needing the 4.10's.

As far as towing goes, I don't have anything to tow right now so I'm thinking about just renting a toy haluer or something. If there's anybody in the San Diego area that has a hauler..........

I just changed the oil yesterday, and man was that stuff black black black. It looked like a gasser after 10,000 miles. Can't wait to go to synthetic at 10,000 to see if it makes a noticeable difference.

Thanks.

DirtEater..... Diesel engines oil gets black in a few miles, doesn't mean it's bad, just black. On the other hand a engine that runs on propane will look like new after 4,000 miles.

Get a few more miles on it and the MPG's will get better, wifes uncle has a 04.5 quad 4x4 SB with a 6sp and 4.10's and he gets 17-18 around 73mph. He's taching 2500 at 75 with 285 tires, so I figure if he can get it so can I, but he has 26K on his. The only time I let mine idle is when I need to, to cool the turbo down. The way I see it we just gota drive the hellouta em till we get more miles on em, but I think mine is close to being peaked, you still have a ways to go, it'll get better.

Soninlaw's new Duramax is getting 10-12 on the highway, but he only has 2K on it, but it is still worse than he got with his 03 and 04.

2005 4x4 QC SB Auto trans & 3.73's. Not quite 1200 miles yet. Mountain driving has averaged out to about 16.5 to 17 mpg. That's about 1 mpg better than the 4.7L V8 gas motor in my 2000 Dakota gets. The Dakota is a Club Cab 2wd with the automatic, 3.92's and 31" tires. The Dakota has about 120,000 on the clock and would be lucky to get 17mpg on a daily basis like the new truck does. Comparing the capability, comfort, and size of the two trucks makes me VERY happy to get the mileage I do from the diesel. It'll be hard to ever purchase another gas powered car or truck again.

Aloha

Not necessarily. This is not your Daddy's small block Chevy.

You can often increase the power on a CTD drastically and see NO loss of economy.

Many of us have seen a MPG increase even as we drastically increased performance.

My truck in present form gets (so far) the best mileage it has ever achieved. This, with 150hp injectors, which are NOT your average daily-driver injectors.

When I add a power module, I may very well get even better mileage (It did last time I had one on).

That's the beauty of a diesel!!

my 04 auto with 4.10's got a best of 17 hiway (hand & computer both, that one was very acccurate) with 10k miles on it. took the 05 with 6 speed to OC the other day 700 miles round trip), left with only 500 miles on it, got 18.7 computer, 18.5 hand calculated, & no additives yet. I believe after break-in a few air & exhaust mods, & a shot of "colt 45auto's mix" should be able to get 20+mpg
all my calculations are based on 70mph
for reference;
04 auto 4.10's 70mph=2150rpm
05 G56 3.73's 70mph=2250rpm
05 NV5600 3.73's 70mph=2075rpm
