Fuel Filters

My 2007 5.9 is the 4th Cummins dodge I have owned. I have never had anything other than a stock fuel filter system and have never had problems. My concern is that my luck could run out if this course continues as I read lots about the stock filter system being not up to par. So 2 questions come to mind that I would like to ask this forum;
1. what is the best (IE smallest micron) filter available for a stock 07 5.9 filter and will it suffice? I pull a 14000lb 5er up steep hills in BC Canada
2. Should I just put an aftermarket lift pump and filter system (eg AirDog or similar) on and be done with it? Up here a pump/filter system mounted to the chassis will need protection from salt, grime, sand etc that comes from the winter roads.
I need this truck to last as it gets good fuel mileage compared to the 6.7s and at the rate I put miles on it will take 10-15 years to get to the point I want to get rid of it.

Use the Baldwin, you will be fine unless modding it takes it's toll..LOL It's the Baldwin PF7977. I use them in my stock canister along with my Airdog 100.

Will that filter fit the 2003 as well? The dealer said they replaced mine before they sold me the truck, but I want to replace it anyway for peace of mind. Id like to get a 5 micron or better.

The Hastings FF1260 is the alternative to the Baldwin PF7977.

In the stock canister, I run the Baldwin PF7977. I also have a 2 Micron Donaldson P551313 filter plumbed inline between the stock filter canister and the injection pump. Kind of expensive changing filters, but cheap peace of mind for a $3000 set of injectors.

Yes sir. How much are you paying for Donaldsons? I got mine at a Cat dealer for like 6-7 bucks...

My records show I paid $7.30 a piece for them. Can't remember where I got them though.

If we have the stock fuel pump on an '05 can we run the 2 micron additional filter between the stock filter canister with a PF7977 in there? Will it not drop fuel pressure too much?
