Fuel Filter & Overhead MPG

2 weeks ago I changed my fuel filter for the first time (8000m). I noticed the overhead doing some strange numbers for the first few miles after that. Anyway, today after filling up 512m mixed driving I discovered that the computer was much more accurate. It read 18.3 when the actual was 17.96. Since I've owned the truck (9 months) it has always been 2- 2.5 off the actual mpg. Anyone have an explaination for this?

Thanks
JS

Joe,
The overhead computer displays average MPG. It will average the MPG from the tanks before and does not reset on each tank. In short I have never found mine to be very accurate. 2 to 3 MPG off in either direction is about normal for my truck. If I want to check my mileage I do it by hand over several tanks.

If you hit reset, you can reset the average for each tank but it's still consistently off by 2 - 3 mpg.
