I just got a normal filter from autozone and did mine yesterday. That thing was still 20 bucks. I guess I will be doing Fleetgaurds in the future.

the xe3585 filter from napa will work regardless of it's O.D and not fitting in the filter lid/cap. simply install the filter then the lid/cap

it doesn't have to fit in the retainers on the underside of the lid. that feature is nice? when removing the old filter for replacement, but just as easy reaching in there and lifting it out.

try to get a 5 micron filter if possible. ideally, a 2 micron filter is suggested from the guys on here for better protection against injector wear.
but i think a 2 mic filter requires an aftermarket filtration system

Showing my ignorance here...

Bought my 06 with 10k miles, been changing motor oil (rotella 5w40 syn), rotating tires, and swappin fuel filters every 5k miles (+/- 200). Just easier to keep up with maintenance that way. Plan to drop pan and replace trans filter @ 30k along with rear end refill (dealer says 15k, but that seems excessive... expecially since I tow 5% or less of the time).

Sooooo question:
1- Been running OEM or fleetguard 7 micron filter. Will the CP3 get enough fuel with a finer filter? Still on factory lift pump...
2- I don't drain the bowl like the FAQ manual said to - just pull the old with as little spillage as possible (don't get it on the paint) and drop new in... should i be draining? Am I going to hurt any rubber in the engine bay by spilling fuel?
3- Not to hijack, but do you guys think the rear end (2wd, so just one) will be okay with changes every 30k?

I'm just paranoid now about injector issues after having read some horror stories this morning (namely one from dwhite). Even though the truck's still under warranty, I just can't stand the thought of dealing with a dealer especially since I do my own maintenance and the trucks not entirely bone stock (nothing too crazy though...). Maybe my fears are unfounded?

Drain the bowl first before pulling the filter out. If you don't your mixing filtered fuel w/unfiltered fuel. The outside of the filter is the unfiltered part, the inside (middle) is filtered. Your mixing them by not draining the bowl completely. Plus, how are you going to clear out any possible trapped water and wipe out the bottom of the bowl if you don't drain it?

Thanks - good enough reason for me! Never thought about the unfiltered fuel. Hopefully most of it passed back through to the tank (and not into my injectors) since I cycle the ignition 3-5 times. Is it okay to just dump the unfiltered fuel back into the tank after collection?

you really don't lose enough fuel from draining the canister to really make it worth putting back in the tank. just my .02

I was able to fill just a little over a water bottle when I drained mine. Nothing I am worried about trying to save.

I just pour into my "oil" bucket. I use a 5 gallon bucket to drain my oil from my truck engine. The other oil....lawnmowers, ATVs, fuel from the fuel filter housing...etc...just go in there with it. When it's full, I take it to Ghetto Zone and empty it into their recycle bin.

..
