Fuel additives Looking for the real truth

Well I have been reading and reading on this sight about additives and what works best to combat ULSD wear and tear on our trucks.

I see two trends one is that all the hype on ULSD damage is just that hype and that additives are not needed and are bad cause they are full of lots of harsh cleaners that probably cause more damage than good.

The other trend is bandwagoning certain products just cause jo blow said its the best.

Im looking for real test facts and not company propaganda that says there product is the best

I personaly have been using PS gray bottle for awile and the last two tanks i decided to try just filling the truck up with strait #2 and see if i notice any difference so far none what so ever same milege 19.5-20 mpg and truck runs the same as well.

So any real facts or test u can share would be great

thanks
-Chris

I can't answer your questions. I'm in the same boat as you. I have been using additives every time I have to put the garbage ULSD in my truck. I usually buy something from Wally World, or from Flying J when I fill my tanks.

I will say this for a fact - my truck runs better and gets better fuel mileage on low sulphur diesel (LSD). But it's getting harder and harder to find.

I will watch this thread with interest. I have a 100 gallon tank in my bed, and I put a $10 bottle of additive in it with every ULSD fill up. Maybe I'm throwing my money away. I'm not brand loyal. I just use whatever I feel like at the time.

I've used Optilube XPD and found it to be pretty good. They have a summer version that is very economical.

Since we got a local station that sells B-20 I've been running that. A little bit of biodiesel will provide more lubricity than most additives. I've noticed it runs a little quieter too.

I got a few cases of Diesel Power additive a few years ago for helping a friend that was in a jam. At the time I was running the Power Service/Marvel Mystery Oil mix (PS/MMO)because it seemed to be the additive of choice. Since I had so much of the Diesel Power now I started adding some of it to the mix too.
My findings?????
Well, I have never had a miraculous mileage gain or my truck has never run smoother or made more power that I could feel. BUT, I have also not had any fuel system issues in any of the many trucks I have had since doing this. I guess, for me, it just makes me feel better to put something in there to help lube the fuel system components....
Now, there was one time, when I had my 03, that I got a free bottle of the silver Power Service and somehow that tankful of fuel gave me about a 2 mpg increase over what I had been averaging. I never tried it again though because I figured it was just a fluke......
I have stopped at the truck stop and bought whatever brand that is that is yellow in color because soooo many guys said it was the best stuff on earth. It did not seem to make any difference....

There is a post on this forum that has information on the study of lubricity additives and Marvels mystery oil actually made the baseline lubricity of #2 diesel go down.

I have found running ULSD my EGTs are higher, I get more smoke and noise. Adding Power Service quietens things down but that's about it. Unbranded ULSD has no additives and I would recomend adding something. The branded ULSD adds a lubricate at the terminal. I don't run the stuff. Arround here Pilot still sell LSD.

Be careful about using Marvel Mystery Oil. I used to use it in my old '03, but stopped when I found out that it contained acetone, which I've heard is bad. In my '06 Megacab, all I've ever used is 2 stroke oil, and after every 4th or 5th tank, either some PS or Redline "stuff", sorry can't remember the proper name for the Redline "stuff" I sometimes put in. But I don't have any problems with my truck.

I read the lubication test that was floating around on the sight and optilube came out on top but i was optimistic of the test cause it seemed like it was a test to promote optilube but i might try it and see if its all cracked up to be as they say.

Does anybody have a link to any other lube test'sto c what additives work best etc

I believe the test wasn't biased toward anything in particular, just the facts. The XPD and the Summer blend both seem to be good stuff.

I've had a spreadsheet used to calculate mileage on my vehicles and have got data on my truck from about the second fill up. I've ran a little of everything in my truck, Power Service (silver and white), Redline 85+, Optilube XPD and Summer, TCW-3, LSD, ULSD and Bio.

Honestly the one that gave me an extra mile or so per gallon over ULSD was the Redline. Its been hard to get and was cost prohibitive so I only ran it a few tanks but it did good.

Straight LSD gave the best and most consistent mileage but I only was fortunate enough to run it the first few tanks.

Of all of them though, bio did the best as far as quieting the truck down. It just sounds smoother, plus you can't beat the lubricity of bio and it keeps everything clean on its own. As long as I can find it around here and know it comes from a reputable source I'll continue to run it. The source I've been getting from has actually been supplying biodiesel for the company I work for for the past 3 or so years. They just never had a public source close by until recently.

I still keep some XPD in one of their transport bottles in case I have to run regular diesel.

I am a mechanic for a fleet, we get all sorts of free addatives to try, we also deal with our local chevron dealer,we buy their oils, and fuels, we also have a 300 gallon tank that is filled with b10. I've tyried everything, two things work that I found. 1 a couple gallons of bio runs smoother and quieter, 2 I also run howes meaner cleaner, the truck isn't any quieter, but I do average 1 mile to the gallon better with it than without. I keep track of my milage, also our cat engines seem to carbon up a lot, we run a couple of bottles in the tank and they clear up.

I started running the OptiLube right after it came out. My engine runs very quietly and I did see about a 1mpg increase. When I have gone a couple tankfuls of fuel without it, the engine does get louder. I have on a couple occasions lately found/used LSD, same basic effects as when running the OptiLube. I have 30-some thousand miles of running the OptiLube, use both winter and summer formulas.

Where I really noticed a difference is when I put it in my 2005 Bobcats fuel. It got extremely quiet. During winter, when I use the Bobcat less, where sometimes it takes a while to go through a tank of fuel, and you could smell that 'stale' fuel smell on startup, I do not get that smell anymore. I noticed that the smell increased after they came out with the ULSD. My local station sells off road diesel but it is just the dyed version of ULSD, if it would have been LSD I'd be using it in the Bobcat. Now I just need something to quiet down the hydraulics, as Bobcat hydraulics can get a little noisy.

I run a mix of filtered WMO and 2-stroke at about a 50-to-1 fuel-to-add treat ratio. Between the two trucks and the wife's car I can burn what gets run in the sumps at almost the same rate. There's a 6-gallon backlog right now.

Why give it back to the oil company after I've already paid for it once when it can be used to offset the ULSD demon and extend the life of my pumps and injectors?

I don't run anything. Truck runs great. Maybe runs a little better after a hard pull.
Original injectors, cp3, 116K miles.
