I did see today that as I held the brakes the front drive shaft did not move and the rear shaft moved in 4 high under a small load. While this was happening I can hear thrashing like it is skipping teeth in the tranfercase. Any thoughts and support would be awsome and thanks in advance.

That should NOT happen. Hopefully just a busted chain and the housing, gears, etc survived but I wouldn't count on it, sorry. You could disconnect your driveshafts and play with it in neutral but I doubt it will tell anything more than what you know now.

You'll have to be a bit more detailed on this. Does this mean you applied the brakes and under a bit of throttle the front propshaft did not turn but the the rear propshaft turned?

Prop the front axle on jackstands, rear on the ground, put it in 4-Hi and turn the front propshaft. If it turns then then you have a t-case problem.

Do the same with the rear-only on stands with the trans in neutral.

I'm wondering if the lock-up hub, collar, fork its messed up. Cranking on that thing like you did in the sand just may have did those parts in.

I was on loose gravel and the back tires were turning a little and the front tires were not with the brakes applied. And I had a buddy do the same and saw that the front/rear shafts were not rotating in unison. Hope this paints a better picture to the mind for my lack of better words.

thank you

If the shafts are not turning together in 4WD (hi or lo) then the TC is broken. Maybe a 1/4 turn max difference between them.

I do have all the tranfercase inner parts that were pulled off a 2000 model 2nd gen and I'm hoping that I'll find what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have a PDF file on the disassembly and assembly of the NP271?
