One of these days, I'll hopefully install a dynatrack manual hub conversion kit and see if that eliminates the heavy towing/high front diff temp connection.

The dynatrac kit should eliminate any temperature over ambient in the front diff. Nothing will be moving in there until you lock it in. My Ford's front diff is fully manual, and that is nothing but ambient temperature.

Not necessarily operator error, although that contributes to the margin of error... and even at the +/-10* you mention there's an overlap between the front & rear covers of 5 degrees.

This is a case where infra-red measuring is good for relative temps, but not absolute temps. (i.e. you can only check front diff temp accurately against itself)
You could refill with 90W-140W and see if temp is different after the same drive in identical conditions.
